She’s Conservative, not Orthodox. And hunting for food is not forbidden. About the former I have no knowledge. However, hunting is generally forbidden. Why? Because for an animal to be kosher it must not only be of the right type (e.g. not a pig), but it must be slaughterd in a kosher manner and you must also be certain that it isn't diseased. Obviously, if one's life is at stake one can hunt (even pigs) and eat whatever you shoot...but that's not what we're talking about here.

Please forgive my ignorance. What did Jewish people do for meat before there weren't butchers in every village?
