I have used a putty knife, a clothes hanger (thin wire), a table knife and even a plastic knife (several - they break) to open a double-hung window in my 56-year life.

All cases were legit, BTW.

But were they locked from the inside ? Were they just stuck ?

Were they old and dilapidated with gaps between the upper and lower casings ?
