Chinese news analyst calls Philippines a 'troublemaker'

MANILA, Philippines - Writing a commentary in China's state press agency, Xinhua news analyst Lu Yu saw the Philippines under President Benigno Aquino III a bad hat in the territorial dispute in the South China Sea.

"The Philippines, under its current administration, has been a true troublemaker in the region," Lu said, complaining that the country has "assaulted and detained" Chinese fishermen and had an old warship "stranded on purpose" at Ren'ai Reef or the Second Thomas Shoal.

The remark was published Monday following Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario's pronouncements on Sunday before the international community in Brunei accusing China of "militarization" at sea.

Del Rosario said at the security forum of Asean leaders that there is a "massive presence of Chinese military and paramilitary ships" off Scarborough (Panatag) Shoal and the Second Thomas Shoal, calling China's activities "threats to efforts to maintain maritime peace and stability in the region."

Lu scoffed at the statement of Del Rosario, saying that it is the Philippines that has been trying to exhibit its might and poses itself as the distressed party before other countries.

Headlines ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1 "For a country that has been zealous about taking in retired warships from other countries to build up its military power and that has from time to time conducted war games in the South China Sea, the top Philippine diplomat's claims carried a particularly strong sense of irony and absurdity," Lu said.

The news analyst claimed that the Philippines has launched a two-track approach on the decades-old sea row: seeking help from other countries such as US and Japan and tying the sea row in various Asean gatherings to "sabotage" China's diplomatic relations.

China wants the Spratley islands, and everything else in the Pacific for that matter.

So do the Russians and probably the rest of the world. And all of them will take advantage. When a dog you hate is down you kick it.

China got smashed by little Japan which I think is nothing compared to what
the Philippine's could inflict on them. That kind of war wouldn't be PC. Old school.

Seems like a double-feature movie. This is where I came into the theater in the late 1930s. Different cast of characters but the same basic screenplay.

I don't think China has much to fear from the Philippines ( you are joking right? ), but they do know that the Philippines will run to Uncle if things get serious. That will be a moment I will relish after decades of big talk from the self serving political class in the Philippines.

The Chinese are patient and will probably wait for Obama to further decimate our Air Force and Navy. “Uncle” will be a true Paper Tiger.

Good points laplata, I have often wondered if the Filipinos would ever have second thought for running the U.S. out. Of coarse when they forced the U.S. out China had very little power, my, my, how things have changed.

And if he could, I really believe that Obama would sell the US Navy to the Chinese.
