CNN airs courtroom image of George Zimmerman’s address, social security number

Via Twitchy and Mediaite, the excuse will be that it was an accident, that they were caught by surprise when unredacted personal information was shown in court. Maybe. They know not to air images of the jurors, they know not to air grisly photos of the crime scene, but apparently they don’t know that sometimes police reports with people’s vital info are shown onscreen in court during trials.

Here’s the thing: Even if this shot is accidental, the only reason the proceedings are on TV to begin with is because the media’s obsessed with the idea that Zimmerman committed a racial atrocity and must be punished for it. Trials typically don’t get saturation coverage because the facts are interesting and tragic and there’s a legit dispute as to whether the prosecution’s or defense’s story of what happened is true. They get saturation coverage because there’s an obvious innocent victim/diabolical defendant dynamic that the media’s interested in. From the beginning, with the Times pushing its “white Hispanic” description of Zimmerman, the press has strained hard to make the Trayvon Martin shooting a passion play about whites treating black life cheaply in modern, post-civil rights America. As terrible as the prosecution’s witnesses have been thus far, there is no scenario — zero — in which most of the press concludes that acquittal on the murder charge is just rather than unjust. Zimmerman must be guilty, morally if not legally. Progress demands it. Against that backdrop, why be surprised that CNN would show his social security number onscreen? The cameras are there because the press has issued its verdict. Intentional or not, this is part of the sentencing phase.

If the media was thrown out of this trial immediately, the trial would cease to exist due to lack if interest, except of course, Sanford burning down. CNN knows that.

I’m hoping he can launch a separate lawsuit on each and every wrong everybody did him: the networks, the reporters, the newspapers, the government, the prosecutor.

They deserve to be put out of business for what they did to him.

This is hardly the first time Zimmerman’s personal information has been distributed by those who oppose him. During the initial coverage of the Zimmerman trial, Spike Lee retweeted the home address of what he thought was Zimmerman’s home address. It turned out to be the wrong address. Roseanne Barr then tweeted Zimmerman’s parents’ home address. “If Zimmerman isn’t arrested I’ll rt his address again. maybe go 2 his house myself,” Barr tweeted.

This isn’t the first element of media bias in the Zimmerman case, either. The Associated Press originally reported that Zimmerman was white. That falsehood was repeated for days by the media, heightening the racial aspect of the case.

The media also broadcast photographs of Zimmerman from a 2005 arrest rather than current photos, and conversely broadcast photographs of Martin as a pre-teen, not the 17-year-old he was at the time of the killing (the media’s photographic choices actually impacted witness testimony during the trial).

NBC News manipulated tape of Zimmerman’s 911 call to make it seem that Zimmerman had targeted Martin because he was black, rather than responding to 911 dispatcher questions. CNN also isolated audio of Zimmerman purportedly calling Martin a racial slur during the call — an allegation that ended up being completely false.

Both ABC News and NBC News also alleged that Zimmerman’s injuries did not exist, releasing badly-pixellated photographs from the night of the incident. As trial testimony has shown, Zimmerman was indeed injured during the incident...

What about a 5 or 10 second delay due to profanity?

Did other networks also show the SSN or did they catch it in time and not show it?

Favored political constituents must have paid quite a bit to sponsor that.

Great! Now watch obama start using it! - Zimmerman’s SS#.

I mean, why not? Doesn’t he use 3-4 other stolen ones already?

Oh, but he’s a DEMOCRAT; it’s just RACIST to speak of such things!

Another one to add to the law suits.

Mr. Zimmerman and his lawyers should become very very wealthy over the suing of these jokers. I really think he should add Obama and the DNC in because they really created this mess when they took the strategy of stirring up the black community with the first White (sounding name) vs. black kid (if I had a son he would look like...) case they could find.

I don’t know if they want to go that route, but I would be cheering mightily. BTW, where is oBozo on this case now? Oh, yeah, he “won”, so now he doesn’t give a flip, but the damage he help create just continues for Mr. Zimmerman and his family.

Seven seconds is the usual, but they wouldn't be listening as closely with a cop on the stand and documents on the screen.

Did other networks also show the SSN or did they catch it in time and not show it?

I don't know of any other networks that carried it. I would love to see what they had on air at 12:16 pm. It wouldn't necessarily be a matter of catching it in time; they might have been on other stories or in a commercial break. Others on this thread have said that the document appeared on the live stream.
