24 x 7 365 security in enough numbers to complety eliminate an attacking force is mandatory. Otherwise, it’s a trap.

"24 x 7 365 security in enough numbers to complety eliminate an attacking force is mandatory. Otherwise, it’s a trap."

That should be mostly electronic and independent from efficient, affordable electricity from the power company. With systems built well enough, a whole attacking cluster of criminal SHTF-ers wouldn't hit what they couldn't see or penetrate.

But the wanna-be murderous banditos would glow nicely for, say, a law-abiding lady at home with a bolt and a sight made for the light level. If she gutted one or two such end-of-the-world rats, the rest would run. That kind of reaction would give her more practice sessions, although there are other possibilities.

Now that we've had our little fun with stories that would make a character like Walter Mitty proud, where's the fuel for the banditos to run 100 miles to the country after the end of the world? And would they be allowed through the roadblocks? The traffic jams would probably stop them first.

And most importantly, all of the camping toys in the world wouldn't help criminals like that to survive for long in remote areas of the West. If gangs made it away from their cities, they would fight with one another, go down from heat stroke, freeze to death, die from gangrenous stress fractures or any number of other hazards and be consumed by animal predators.

They don't know what they're doing, and they don't know how to fix anything. They're slobs. Most of them aren't even in good physical shape. Even if they were, they're too lazy to train for proper fire and maneuver, if proper fire-and-maneuver instructions and teamwork were on the Net (which they're not, thank goodness). Back to my energy studies.

By the way, did you know that prairie dogs are cannibals?

Oh...I didn’t see that you’re in a heavily populated area with beautiful, easy weather year-round, lots of trees, much water, plenty of oxygen, etc. (anywhere in TN) before commenting with all of that. But electronic, computerized security and many other personal security measures would still be helpful. Where I live, there are no people, no services, no trees, extreme visibility, Mars-like weather (except for deep spraying ice and 100-mph+ wind gusts in winter), about seven months of winter, not much water, not much oxygen and few animals except cannibalistic rodents. And no end-of-the-world TV. OK...back to looking at steam engine stuff...
