A teenage friend of Trayvon Martin was forced to admit today in the George Zimmerman murder trial that she did not write a letter that was sent to Martin's mother describing what she allegedly heard on a phone call with Martin moments before he was shot.
In a painfully embarassing moment, Rachel Jeantel was asked to read the letter out loud in court.
"Are you able to read that at all?" defense attorney Don West asked.
Jeantel, head bowed, eyes averted whispered into the court microphone, "Some but not all. I don't read cursive."
It sent a hush through the packed courtroom.
Jeantel, 19, was unable to read any of the letter save for her name...
During nearly two hours of cross examination Wednesday in which he tried to raise questions about her version of events and accused her of telling several lies under oath, including about her whereabouts during Martin's wake.
"Under oath, you created a lie and said you went to the hospital?" asked West.
"Yes," responded Jeantel. She said she lied because she didn't want to see the body.
Jeantel became increasingly agitated and scoffed when West told her that she would have to continue testifying.
She is seen as a critical witness to the prosecution because she is the only person able to say that Martin claimed that he noticed a strange man following him and that he was scared. Jeantel said Martin described the stranger as a "creepy ass cracker."
Jeantel said Martin, 17, was walking home during halftime of the NBA All-Star Game when he became unnerved because he was being followed.

I hope that you are wrong. So do I, my friend. But the way this has developed, I don't think I am.

My company had a big problem with workers unable to read hazmat safety precautions and MSDS sheets. All of the applicants are now screened for literacy. On testing day, about five applicants will remain to complete the hiring process from a pool of 15 - 20. Most of them are black.
This sounds familiar. I worked at a chemical plant that used to hand out job applications and allowed people to take them home to fill out. Then they discovered the illiterates were having other people fill them out.
One of the engineers said he used a pack of brightly printed flower stickers to communicates hazards to the illiterates who slipped through.
This was a dangerous operation; everyone was trained to use self-contained breathing air. Fires were commonplace. Knowing how witless many of the workers were did not leave one with a warm and fuzzy feeling. At the beginning of one short-handed shift, two of the engineers discussed going to the city jail and bailing out enough of the workers to fill out a shift.

My grandson was learning cursive in kindergarten in a public school in Tennessee. He now goes to a private school and they are still teaching him cursive. And yes, he knows its cursive. I’ve also heard from a teacher friend that they are no longer teaching it in public schools in North Carolina.

it's more likely that there have always been functional illeterates, but the general public was mostly unaware of it until recently.
I attended a modest city elementary school in the 1950s in a mostly blue collar neighborhood. I don't remember anyone there having difficulty with reading. I asked my friend of 50 years if she remembered anyone from her elementary school who could not read--and she attended a segregated school in Kentucky--and she could not recall anyone. I think in the 1950s one could not easily miss learning the basics.

In the Rockford,Illinois public school system, teaching cursive is PROHIBITED. One teacher who was trying to do it on the sly got in troble for it, and he had to stop.Hey, cool! Cursive can be the white man's secret code.

She says in the article she dictated it to someone. She didn’t name the person. I would guess an older woman.

SHE WAS EXTREMELY CREDIBLE Yes, she was very honest today. She told the truth about lying several times. That makes her credible to these folks, I guess.
Maybe someone needs to tell them what credible means.

Hey Bud I’m right there with you. At one time I did a lot of architectural planning/drawing and my handwriting was awesome. Since I switched to computers (CAD) I can’t read my own name if I write it in cursive/longhand. And if I do sign anything it depends on the day how it flows . . . never the same.

Dont mean a thing. When HLN had their mock jury on last night...THEY ALL WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ONE GAY GUY...SAID SHE WAS EXTREMELY CREDIBLE AND HELPED THE PROSECUTION!!!!!!
Same thing the talking head panel on MSNBC was saying. That she was very truthful and won the jury’s trust and sympathy. They also said West hurt himself by being so “mean” to her. They brushed aside all the lies (I’ve lost count of how many)and said they didn’t mean anything. Some even said they weren’t really lies,,,just minor “inconsistencies.” And, of course, they all agreed that blacks calling whites “crackers” isn’t racist.
