A bill that opponents claimed would virtually ban abortion in Texas failed to pass late Tuesday after lawmakers missed a deadline by just minutes.
There were chaotic scenes after a filibuster attempt fell just short and protesters cheered, clapped and shouted for the final 15 minutes as lawmakers tried to hold the vote before the session ended at midnight.
The filibuster by Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, lasted more than 10 hours but ended after three challenges to her speech were upheld.
Spectators in the Texas Senate chamber protest a halt to Sen. Wendy Davis' filibuster against an anti-abortion bill. The only way Democrats in the Republican-controlled Senate could defeat the measure was by not letting it come to a vote on Tuesday.
Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, acting as Senate president, initially said the voting began just before midnight, NBCDFW.com reported, and several reports suggested that the bill had been passed and would go to Gov. Rick Perry. But Dewhurst later announced that the vote had been held too late.

Most were wearing TU burnt orange, the official uniform of Texas liberal baby killers.
Call ‘em back, Rick!
If Perry calls another session and gets this passed, I will walk through broken glass to vote for him for POTUS.
The Democratic Party is the Party of Death.
Abortion and Obamacare will see to it.
Real Christians do not support the DEMS in any way.
I was so pissed as I watched the whole debacle live. I couldn’t believe my eyes when it was quite evident that the Dem senators tried every move to delay the vote. And I was yelling at the idiot Repubs to watch the clock. Totally played.
The clown Dewhurst(sp?) tried to show that he was impartial and gave the Dems too many unwarranted points of order. I honestly think they (the Senate Repubs) didn’t want to pass this bill because Dewhurst is running to the left of Perry and wants to show he’s a moderate. What a maroon.
LOL! Look at the jihadist with the face mask.
Dewhurst’s comments this morning somewhat exonerated him. He was thoroughly disgusted with the mob last night, actually calling them a “mob” and comparing them to the OWS crowd of vagrants.
There was a lot of out of state OWS types.
< There was a lot of out of state OWS types. >
They don’t require a TX DL for admittance? That’s weird. Not good.
Despite their evil cause, the Rats play to win, the GOP, not so much. I am sure Perry will ask for a redo, but it makes you wonder if the GOPe has any courage or convictions.
< Yes, thats from the Texas Penal Code. And, no, there is NO exception for state legislative business. Free speech does NOT include disrupting the legislative session. >
Well, i guess my question would be, would you still feel the same in a few weeks if 500 moms-to-be fill the gallery and create as much noise? If you call for their arrest too, then that’s fair.
IMHO, we need to start acting more like the Dems act if we want to be heard, that’s all. If i call for their arrest, then i have to live by those same rules when Perry calls another special session. It’s NO time to be be cow-towing to liberals here in Texas, as i’m sure you know. In some cases, we just need to SHOUT louder if we’re going to be heard. Screw the “being civilized” routine that Republicans always take, particularly in a crowd situation. (To the NSA: I’m strictly talking about decibel volume, NOT violence.)
Yes, anyone disrupting the legislature out of turn should be arrested. The floor of the chamber is the proper venue for debate when recognized, not the gallery.
If you want selective anarchy, you are full-bore anarchist.
The last thing those Womyn have to worry about is an unwanted pregnancy....even rapists wouldn’t touch them.
< Democratic Screamers were in the observers gallery. Security did not remove them. >
I saw at least one of them being led away in handcuffs by a DPS (Dept Public Safety) state trooper. Saw it on TXCN news this morning.
This is the Texas Lege. It gets rowdy. Instead of condemning them for not fighting fair, why don’t we do the same?
Anyone? I think it’s a valid question myself.
WHAT ARE THE POLICE FOR. If you can’t do the people’s business because of ‘Occupy Wall Street’ thugs, then arrest and remove. This EXCUSE for not signing the bill in time is CRIMINAL.
< If you want selective anarchy, you are full-bore anarchist. >
Who said anything about “selective?” Are you even reading my replies on this thread? I am saying that instead of whining and complaining about people who are passionate about their cause, why don’t we show them (Marxists in general) we are just as passionate about ours, and then figure out a way to show them? The time for bitching and moaning is coming to an end. There’s a storm coming, and in my mind it’s not too late to avoid it. But then again, I’m thinking “Big Picture” here, while most ppl (on this thread) are not. Not wanting to argue, just trying to motivate ppl to do something about it.
And whether you realize it or not, you are considered a full-bore anarchist just by posting on FR. Welcome to the club. ;-)
< Despite their evil cause, the Rats play to win, the GOP, not so much. >
Exactly.
Let’s see if Perry has the ‘nads to call another special session.
Where's my jacket?
That picture. Hilarious!
