HOWEVER, just days ago, Assange talked like Ecuador was a done deal for Snowy. And abra-cadabra, now it's not. Hmmm...

I think it is. The problem is that there are no direct flights between Moscow and Ecuador. That flight to Havana was not an option because it went into US airspace and could have been forced to land.
