Alana Goodman of the Washington Free Beacon reports:
Former Sen. Jon Kyl (R., Ariz.) criticized what he described as a resurgent isolationist streak in Congress during a breakfast discussion at the Capitol Hill Club on Tuesday.
Kyl, who led the 2010 Senate fight against President Obamas missile reduction treaty with Russia, also discussed the American Internationalism Project he launched with former Sen. Joe Lieberman at the American Enterprise Institute. The project seeks to promote the principles of national security, economic prosperity, and American values.
You see [this isolationist streak] both in the House and in the Senate, said Kyl. And this is why Joe [Lieberman] and I decided to work together on this project. We had seen this developing in our last couple years of our service in the Senate.
Kyl said the unwillingness of Republicans to find a solution to sequestration-mandated defense cuts was the most troubling evidence that the party is moving away from its traditionally strong stance on national defense.
The lack of dedication to finding a solution to the problem on the Republican side convinced me that we had to begin to find an alternative way of discussing this subject because clearly we were not being effective in our conversation, said Kyl.
"American Internationalism Project" sounds like just the sort of project that people like George Washington and John Quincy Adams warned us against.
The perpetual war for peace is getting more than a little old.
How bout we secure our borders, stop importing Muslims, and stop spying on Americans.
I lost most respect for Kyl after he was a major opponent of amnesty in 2006, then ran for reelection opposed to amnesty that same year, but then was a major amnesty pusher in 2007.
Sounds as if, like so many former members of Congress, Kyl left for greener pastures.
Only an Open Borders Free Trade Communist Globalist is more concerned with isolationism instead of American Exceptionalism
I will always take Isolationism and Protectionism over Globalism and Communism
Kyl seems to forget the forays into Iraq and Afghanistan that have resulted in failed follow-on regimes after our attempts at nation building. If a Christian nation were at risk of being overrun by mohammedan hordes, that’d be a rational cause to assist.... but shedding blood for muslim filth? Oh, HELL no!!!
Not for nothing but I like Isolationism. Its high time our Government learn to keep its nose at home.
We have enough of our own Problems. We are such Isolationist that our government is trying to force 20 million illegal alien’s down our throat.
It is cloudier than that. The American Internationalism Project is a spinoff of the American Enterprise Institute, that is an odd association indeed, perhaps best described as sponsored by “corporate conservatism.” Sometimes labeled as NeoCon, I’m not even sure that’s a good label.
Personally, I see the word “Internationalism” as a serious red flag as well, but this is not the typical use of the term. It seems to advocate traditional American ideals instead of membership in dubious internationalist organizations, of which there are far too many.
Bottom line, I’m reserving judgment about this.
My own take on American international involvement is pretty case by case. Far too often we have horned in where it was ill-advised. The French sometimes intervene as well, but their attitude is to enter, kick butt, and leave. The US has the problem of a sticky foreign policy, that once we are there, it is entirely too difficult to leave.
Direct US military involvement is also terribly expensive, far more than the value of what we are doing. Perhaps subcontracting to a corporation like the former Blackwater, might be the way to go for low intensity missions, spending tens of millions instead of hundreds of billions.
Bring ALL our troops home,
Close the borders and tell the world to play fair or pound sand.
