Given the big "unknown" of what he has, it was a huge mistake to press criminal charges on him. They should have given him immunity, and invited him to a senate hearing on the potential constitutional violations. As the constitution is above the President and yes, even the nsa, they had precedent to do so.

Handling it this way would have allowed for some damage control and limited exposure of further (and perhaps) more harmful info sec releases. Now he has no choice but to stay in the public eye, lest he suffer an unfortunate event.

Exactly correct. The oligarchy has responded in exactly the worse way possible. It clearly demonstrates to the entire world just how out of control and childish the US government has become.
