Central-va is comeing to my defense, referencing my statement that Lee put companies of sharp shooters behind his attacking brigades to shoot stragglers or those who would cower from US Army fire. He agrees that Lee gave such an order, but of course we all know that noone would follow Lee’s orders. Not like Lee was a real General or anything.

Like a said a real student of history would not judge a desperate Lee in the final weeks of the war issuing an order that probably wasn't necessary or carried out.. But you do.
The troops that were "deserting" weren't straggling in line of battle. It is hard to straggle when you are in a trench earth work. Secondly those "deserters" were from South and North Carolina running home to stop Sherman's torches.
