Yep you can bet the Black box was burnt to a crisp in the fire. No evidence there.
He was also working on a story related to a suit by Jill Kelly.She was suing the NSA over the release of her e-mails. He had told friends that he was being followed and also told other reporters. A fireman was quoted just after the crash, he stated he had never witnessed a fire like this at an auto accident.

The autopsy would show if there was any medication or psychotrophic drugs in his system.
The autopsy would be conducted by the County Coroner ( a county government agent)
The black box , ‘if’ it isn’t burned beyond recognition, would give much information about the operation of the car.
It can be read by law enforcement ( a county or State government agent).
Conjecture has it that the story was about David Paetraeus , former Director of the CIA ( read as “Spooks” ), and his reason for leaving the Agency .
When it comes to investigation of government intrigue and “spooks” , ... all things are possible /all bets are off !!
The engine probably ripped loose in the first split-second; it seems to have traveled pretty much parallel with the road. Immediately after impact, momentum could have pivoted the body of the car part-way around the tree; the rear wheels were probably off the ground for a second or so.
I wouldn't count on that. Remember, coroners tend to have the same coincidental fates these days.
