Yes, they are an odd little enclave there. I think they are basically hillbillies. There’s been some problems up there lately, I think there was an incident with some cops and somebody got shot, maybe killed (I can’t remember if it was a cop or a non=cop) and then I think they were/are having some “Kelo” like eminent domain disputes with the powers that be.
There was some kind of altercation involving some Mahwah police and NJ Troopers where the cops claimed self defense. Also there’s an ongoing lawsuit they filed against Ford, allegedly when Ford had an assembly plant in Mahwah they used an area of the Ramapo Mtns as an illegal dumping ground
