Bill Maher Defends Paula Deen After Firing: ‘Do We Always Have to Make People Go Away?’

Bill Maher offered one of the rare public defenses of embattled celebrity chef Paula Deen on Friday, asking why “we always have to make people go away” for saying bad words.

Deen was dropped by the Food Network following her public apology after it emerged this week that she had admitted to using the n-word in the past.

“I’m just wondering,” Maher began on his HBO show “Real Time,” “if you’re 66 years old and you were raised in Georgia and you were a child before the civil rights movement, do you get a bit of a pass — ”

“No — ” members of his panel cut in.

” — or you say no, you’ve had 40 years to get used to — I agree,” Maher said. But he added a few moments later, “I also think people shouldn’t have to lose their shows and go away when they do something bad.”

“It’s just a word, it’s a wrong word, she’s wrong to use it, but do we always have to make people go away?” Maher asked.

The panel again disagreed, with former New York Times columnist Bob Herbert saying, “For me that word is the line…nobody should be using that word.”

Maher asked whether “we should ban rap records” and said that in America, “you’ve gotta be a free country, even to be an a–hole.”

Paula is a lib. Probably voted for mulatto son.....twice. But she did out mooshellini as a non stop eater...which more than likely sealed her fate. Not only does her gig at FN end, her magazines, cookbooks, restaurants, pushing hams from Smithfield (now a CHINESE company) these go down the tubes as well. Not that she was right/wrong....but this is (sorry) WAS America and we at one time did have freedom to speak however we wished, ya’ll

He was talking about “white niggers”, so that doesn’t count.

And he did apologize.

Did LBJ, or any Demoacrat, ever apologize for these?

http://www.canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/40889

By Robert Rohlfing
“I apologize for the following language but we have to understand the truth that is not being told any longer. The following quotes are LBJ quotes:”

“I’ll have those niggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years.” —Lyndon B. Johnson to two governors on Air Force One -

“These Negroes, they’re getting pretty uppity these days and that’s a problem for us since they’ve got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we’ve got to do something about this, we’ve got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference.”—LBJ

You can find this in Ronald Kessler’s “Inside The White House”

I used the keyword to obtain more information. What surprised me and I concede I am often slow on the uptake, is this. Freeper RedCap had posted an item from the Chicago Tribune dated March 7th 2012. I learned from that item that one Lisa T. Jackson, a former manager of "one of five restaurants in Deen's group" was suing for various reasons.

It was more concerning Deen's brother "Bubba" Hiers, than Paula. He was said to have been sexually improper etc. Lisa then brought up the use of that word by Paula.

What I cannot figure is why it took so long (27 months),before the ordure hit the fan on this business? Can there be a specific group out there who drum up these things and then sit back and exult in the personal anguish of someone?.

words are "hurtful" only if we let them be hurtful

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."

My grandmother told me that over and over when I was an easily-offended teen. It stuck. And now, evidently, it's not true.

They’re not held accountable, and never apologize for anything they say or do. Kennedys murder women, Clintons soil them, Kerry commits treason, Weiners expose themselves... etc etc etc. It’s a “resume enhancement” for them.

No one—black, white red or yellow or Brown should use the forbidden “N-Word” . Any book that uses it—or movie—must be destroyed. Any rap son g—must be burned. saying the world should a criminal offence —All races, all people. A rule for opne group and not another is unfare and unjust.

Many years ago some Christian Fundamentalists tried to have Huck Finn removed from the public schools because the book contained a few sexual innuendos. For this they were ridiculed by the left. UNTIL the very same left discovered the book also contained the n-word, then THEY fought tooth and nail to have it removed. Never mind the time the book was written, the context the word was used, nor the fact that Mark Twain was an outspoken abolishionist. For once Bill Maher is right, being an a-hole is disgusting, but it's not a crime.

Not sure where you are going with this. It’s natural for people to want to fit in with each other, but some white people try too hard.

Black people today have this sort of ‘license’ to use gutter language and somehow be labeled as ‘cool’. Heck, many educated people consider a lot of inner city gutter talk as a language (Ebonics) or a cultural phenomenon.

To me, non-intelligent English makes you look like a stupid idiot...regardless of color, sexual orientation, or whatever. People who use the N-word come off like idiots. The fact that this word is so acceptable in black culture is one of the contributing factors to blacks lagging behind hispanics, whites, and asians in terms of income and social brakets.

She’s 66 years old and is a multi-millionaire, I’m sure she’ll live.
