Catholics in California went 62-38.
Catholics in New York went 47-53.
Catholics are about a third of CA, so this represents about 10 million Catholics. If they went 62-38, that’s 6.2 million vs 3.8 million, or a gap of about 2.5 million people.
Catholics in the US are 25 percent of the population, so 75 million people.
Catholics in the US went 51/48 for Obama. Given the overall population at 75 million, that would mean 38 million Obama supporters and 36 million Romney supporters.
I think you can see the math here. ;) 2.5 million more Catholics voted for Obama than Romney, but with the nation as a whole excluding California, Romney did better than CA.
Looking at the EC - Ohio, NY, FL, PA, VA and NC all went for Romney. Catholics didn’t cost Romney the election.
Thank you. VERY interesting.
100% of the active members of every Christian denomination of any kind could vote for Obama in California and that wouldn’t be half the vote there.
