We owe it to ourselves as much as to the lives sacrificed to our semantic gymnastics to ask: Does a baby, at any stage in its gestation, really have no value unless the mother wills it?

There is a clear message being given to every woman who uses abortion as birth control. She's convinced that because the baby is completely dependent on her, its life is worth less than her convenience and self-absorption. What she does not realize (either because she lacks the intellectual capacity or she chooses not to see it) is that her life has exactly the same value as her baby's. The day she becomes completely dependent on another person for her survival, her life also becomes disposable. A large part of abortion support is rooted in the belief that individuals have no intrinsic worth.

I would quibble with the idea that life begins at conception. Life is a continuum; the sperm and ovum that unite to form a zygote are alive, too. No known process can cause life to spring into being. Life can only end.

I also would question the idea that a baby can only feel pain after 20 weeks. The nervous system begins to form at 3 weeks after conception (close to the time the heart starts beating). Cells function according to the kind of cell they are--so, as soon as nervous tissue cells form, they function as nervous tissue. This means that the embryo at 3 weeks is beginning to sense its environment--it can feel. While I doubt that it feels pain the way we do (because the nervous system is still very simple at that point), it probably can feel pain by 5 or 6 weeks, when it has a clearly defined brain and peripheral nervous system.

Amen!

Kathryn Lopez is right on the mark. For Ms. Pelosi to describe abortion rights as sacred ground not only shows her ignorance about the Catholic faith, but also her contempt for it.

Someone who holds that the right to murder an innocent human being just because it has a week left in the uterus as “Sacred” is a sick individual.

Nancy Pelosi would have made a great female guard at Dachau.

It's not that Pro lifers have talking points that not as good as they used to be, it's just that the central concept that life begins at conception has become more of quaint, old fashioned notion than a central issue for debate in the current mindset of many members of our society.

In our society the de humanization of an unborn baby has become so pervasive that many people are simply disassociated from the realization that abortion may be the killing of an innocent human being.

An de humanization is always the first step to enable the taking life in the pursuit of some greater purpose.

I watched the video of Nancy and she replied to one of the press people that she had given birth to five children in five years. The way she said this just made me sick. So giving birth to five kids gives her the right as a Catholic to tell America they have the right to murder the unborn. If my math is correct, that means she gave birth to her last child at age 30. And since she made politics her career there was a troop of nannies, housekeepers, etc. to raise her kids.
