Malorie Blackman, the newly-appointed childrens laureate and writer of teenage fiction, said youngsters ought to read about sex within the safe confines of a book rather than through innuendo and porn.
She told the Telegraph giving children challenging themes would allow them to process it within a safe context rather than turning to damaging and brutalising images.
Her arguments were echoed by author and Carnegie Medal-winner Melvin Burgess, who said there should be no actual limits to the subjects covered in teenage fiction.
Blackman, author of Pig Heart Boy, Noble Conflict and the Naughts and Crosses series, said it was important to remember teenagers would get their information from somewhere.
The thing about it is that if you have books for teenagers, you present these ideas within a kind of safe setting, she said.

How about teaching chastity? About teaching them about the natural law in regards to sex and relationships?
Teaching kids perversion is OK as long as Her Majesty's Government does it, I guess. (/sarc)
I picked up a romance. I got about 1/3rd of the way into the sex scene and put it down. No man lasts 14 pages, I don’t care how good an athlete he is.
If real images will stop children from looking at porn, why is there a porn epidemic?
It would seem that each person would only want to view it once.
You gotta love that logic. It’s like putting heroin users on methadone. And IIRC, heroin in turn was first used to get people off morphine . . .
What a dip this woman is - sex leads to sex it doesn’t lead to rainbows and unicorns!
Hey...why not teach them how to smoke crack in the classroom...that way they know how to smoke crack instead of learning to do it in a crack house? /s
Which is why you fire people running the schools....not so much the teachers. Never trust a GOPer who wants to fire all the teachers....they keep the inmates running the asylum
bookmark.
In real life your normal sex scene would be all of 1/3 of a book page...
Last line in an honest sex scene involving teenagers...
Girl:"What!!??Is that it!!?? You're done already!!?!!"
“...sex leads to sex it doesnt lead to rainbows and unicorns!”
And all this time I thought it led to dancing.
Speak for yourself. And I’m not an athlete.
When I retired a few years ago, I told my wife I was thinking about writing a book... a novel about recent political events in the U.S. She told me to put plenty of sex scenes in the book. I told her I wasn’t planning on any sex scenes and might completely dispense with any. She told me no book of fiction will sell without a certain amount of sex scenes. She reads the murder mysteries, and I read politics/current events/biographies. I wonder if she’s right.
Not sure what she reads but I read all of Ellery Queen, Rex Stout, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Ross McDonald, Sir Doyle and many others. Very little sex, if any.
Yeah. I looked at her pic and now I understand why she said that. She’s a black, liberal Obama loving idiot. Anybody with a brain knows the way to keep kids fom getting hooked on porn is to keep them away from it. It’s a biological instinct that’s normal. Some people just go overboard into it’s deviant aspects into abnormal sexual behavior. She’s on the wrong track.
You can bet a lot of what would end up in her curriculum would be homosexual.
I read mostly fantasy. At least among the authors I read, there are very few sex scenes.
It wouldn’t be difficult to arrange this in such a way that many girls could be warned off sex altogether ...
“Honest” descriptions of childbirth would also contribute.
Eh? What? Isn’t that why cars have back seats and the best cars are station wagons?
She only reads all the modern murder mystery writers....Joan Hess is one. None of the older writers.
I think it depends on your target audience.....
Liberals....lots of homoerotic, S&M, sleazy porn....
Conservatives....normal sexual relationship within the bonds of marriage...
