The mother of a 16-year-old boy held captive for 10 days and repeatedly raped told court Friday she wants the man responsible declared a dangerous offender.
David James Leblanc, 48, was sentenced to 11 years in prison Friday after he previously pleaded guilty to charges including kidnapping, forcible confinement and sexual assault. He also pleaded guilty to charges in an earlier case involving the sexual assault of two young boys.
The teen's mother said her son was prescribed anti-HIV drugs and anxiety medication after he was chained and raped by two men in a cabin in Upper Chelsea, a rural area about 125 km west of Halifax.
"If there's anything good that can come from this sickening crime against my son it would be to have David James Leblanc declared a dangerous offender," the mother said in her victim impact statement.
"He has been filled with such an overwhelming amount of despair and hopelessness and to have your 16-year-old child tell you through tears and sobs that he doesn't want to live anymore."
While she spoke, Leblanc rolled his eyes, sighed and shook his head.
In September, Leblanc promised the teen a painting job. The boy said Leblanc conned him into getting into a van in Halifax, and drove him to a cabin in Upper Chelsea, where he met Leblanc's partner, Wayne Alan Cunningham.
Leblanc gave him alcohol and offered him money to see his penis, and the boy said he was marched into a bedroom, chained to the floor and sexually assaulted.
Over the next 10 days, the teen said he was sometimes chained standing with his arms above his head and other times locked to the bed while Cunningham and Leblanc took turns raping him.
Eventually, the teen told court, he managed to unscrew the eye ring holding one of his wrists when the cabin was empty. Wearing only a hoodie, he ran barefoot to find help.
After a national manhunt, Cunningham's body was found outside of Thunder Bay, Ont.
Leblanc was arrested nearby.
The mother said her son has scars on his wrists and ankles from being chained up -- a "reminder of his ordeal."
The Crown has not yet decided whether or not to pursue a dangerous-offender designation against Leblanc. The status carries an automatic indefinite prison sentence, with no parole for seven years.
He will, if the other inmates find out what he is in the joint for. More than likely, he will be in PC for his entire prison term.
I would tell the boy that he has lots to live for.
When this monster gets out of prison you will be a man.
So between now and then you have plenty of time to prepare for the day when next you meet that monster.
As Kahn says in Star Trek II, The Wrath of Kahn; Kirk, old friend, do you know the Klingon proverb, "Revenge is a dish best served cold"?
Scum like this is why we need the Death Penalty for underage rape.
Unfortunately too many Criminal Rights Advocates would whine...and many politicians and elitists do not want to see capital punishment for themselves and their buddies
No, the State will protect him from the general prison population.
