Surrounded by sleigh bell-ringing Santa Claus impersonators, Gov. Rick Perry on Thursday signed a law protecting Christmas and other holiday celebrations in Texas public schools from legal challengesbut also stressed that freedom of religion is not the same thing as freedom from religion.
It was a serious tone for an otherwise fun bill-signing and should bolster the governors Christian conservative credentials before he travels to Washington for the Faith & Freedom Coalitions Road to Majority conference with the likes of tea party darlings and U.S. Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida, Kentucky's Rand Paul and fellow Texan Ted Cruz.
Dubbed the Merry Christmas bill, the bipartisan measure sailed through the state House and Senate to reach Perrys desk.
It removes legal risks of saying Merry Christmas in schools while also protecting traditional holiday symbols, such as a menorah or nativity scene, so long as more than one religion and a secular symbol are also reflected.

Is this what we’ve come to......a law protecting Christmas....whoda thunk.....
It is sad that it had to come to this to make Merry Christmas officially recognized. Good job Texas and Gov. Perry for making it so.
Hey, let’s have a Freedom from Liberalism Law. It’s a religion. It is patently offensive. It is shoved down our throats in schools, churches, universities, newspapers, tv, movies, everywhere. Let’s try it.
I”m with ya,,heck,,make a one-day holiday every year, just for starters!
Dang. This will piss off the Pilgrims.
I am sure the Dept of Education an the teachers’ union is very saddened by this Christmas development.
Oh wait!!! It was bi-partisan? NICE!!!!
Rubio is not a Tea Party darling and they need to let him know it. He’s a McCain wannabe and RINO in the truest form of the word.
The atheists are going to explode. I love it!! MERRY CHRISTMAS in June!
Indeed, the reason why such a bill was passed was precisely because liberalism is so dominant and permeates everything in our culture. And , liberlism is hostile to religion. Liberalism is hostile to the point that many are too intimidated to even say the word “Christmas”. A bill like this is a step in the right direction.
Rick Perry should have been our nominee. He stands for everything I believe in and hasn’t backed down.
It’s a damn shame we’ve come to the point where we gotta pass laws protecting people’s rights to celebrate and to say Merry Christmas
>> Rick Perry should have been our nominee. He stands for everything I believe in and hasnt backed down.
I couldn’t agree more. Too bad he got all tangled up when speaking. I pray he gets another chance.
What sickens ME is the fact that the State of Texas felt the need to pass a special LAW to protect the 1st amendment rights of the people.
It appears that the entire Constitution of the United States of America has been declared “null and void”.
A citizen of the state of TAXES (MA.) congratulates the state of TEXAS. Amazing how a swapping of a couple of letters makes such a difference.
I will never forgive Herman Cain for jumping on the ******head bandwagon.
What a shame Perry was recovering from back surgery during the primary’s.
I thought this was rather silly at first, but then I remembered all of the liberals who have moved here to take advantage of our good Texas economy.
Its a good thing to keep their liberal, atheistic opinions muzzled.
Count me in complete agreement.
I was put off by the Gingrich/Cain Alliance as well.
Everyone was **** scared of Perry until they realized he was not on the top of his game.
Then the ridicule started.
Sad we need a law to protect free speech, oh wait we had one... it was #1 on the list.
