Security: With the director of national intelligence defending a program he told Congress didn't exist, the Patriot Act's author says this isn't the targeted surveillance intended and warns of losing needles in a too-big haystack.
Edward Snowden is quite possibly a traitor, but we have been caught in a Prism of our own making, outsourcing our national security to 29-year-old unstable contractors, one of nearly 500,000 employees of private firms with access to the government's most sensitive secrets.
Perhaps if we were doing the targeted surveillance envisioned by Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., when he wrote the Patriot Act, we wouldn't need so many potential security risks.
It boggles the mind that we didn't listen to the Russians when they warned about the Tsarnaev brothers in part because, well, they're the Russians. But we want to preserve the records of every housewife in Des Moines because data mining that arguably invades the privacy rights of innocent Americans might reveal something.
One person whose privacy was not invaded by U.S. intelligence was Tamerlan Tsarnaev, as he repeatedly visited the al-Qaida online magazine Inspire for its recipe "Build a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom."
The NSA's blanket surveillance did not detect Tsarnaev's interest in building the pressure cooker bombs he would use to devastating effect at the Boston Marathon. The massive databases that we are building a massive facility in Utah to store also failed to uncover the online communications that Tsarnaev had with a known Muslim extremist in Dagestan.
Sensenbrenner, who wrote and introduced the Patriot Act to Congress in 2001, says the National Security Agency overstepped its bounds by issuing the order to collect phone log records from millions of Americans.

Most of this information is only good after the fact. But to me it was amazing how fast that they DID catch them after getting some blurry photos of them. They just needed a reason to go after them.
In their case the reason was blowing up bombs and killing and maiming people. The bad part is that the threshold for going after someone may be lowered. Like posting some negative comment about Our Most Dear Leader.
They never fit the Profile
Mosques are exempt from NSA surveillance?
Sequester cuts, GOP fault.
They did not catch them because they were looking for us.
Tsarnaev brothers were instruments of Social Justice.
The real terrorists are at the Church of God, and Tea Party gatherings (just two examples of bitter clinging).
“Jingle bells, jingle bells...jingle all the way. Oh, jingle bells...”
Catch them?
They ignored the Russians who wanted to whack them.
But OUR gov’t wanted the murderers of beheaded Jews
in Waltham, MA to get off “scot-free”.
They ignored notifying the Russians.
THEN they ignored the warnings.
THEN they ignored that the terrorists had no passport.
SO EXACTLY
WHAT DOES A TERRORIST NEED THESE DAYS TO GET CAUGHT???
(answer: they must impersonate an honest, responsible
Veteran or Tea Party member)
The lame exsuse I heard was they didn’t spell his name right when they conducted the search.
Yeah, that the ticket.
apparently the administrati are far more interested in intimidating and controlling Americans than they are at protecting them.
IN protecting them.
Obama’s role is to advance the muslim cause. No matter what it does to the rest of us.
Collect everything and sort it out later is not a strategy, it is stupid and unconstitutional and endangers our God-given rights. We have very little chance of taking back this government from the coalition of two parties. One that has decided that we are enemies and the other that we are idiots.
How could they not? They had a billion dollars worth of resources in the immediate area and shut down an entire city over two junior terrorist...
And a citizen had to tip them off so they could make the 2nd arrest on junior terrorist #2.
Why you playing stupid?
All this spying on, monitoring, threatening, bugging and intimidating American citizens yet these low level unsophisticated Boston Bomber Muslims are not caught by governments tax paid trillion dollar anti-terrorist apparatus, prior to the event??
Hows that work Mr. Kangel?
Did ya recall it was *government* who were providing these junior Muslim terrorist with hundreds of thousands in tax paid food stamps, gifts, prizes, school coupons and other tax paid goodies?
What's up with that Kangel?
Waddya mean?
These junior Muslim terrorist which the government welcomed into the U.S. in the first place, just set off the bombs then simply walked down the street back to their apartment.
With a billion in government/law enforcement resources, how could they not catch them as their pics were all over TV?
And especially since a citizen called the cops and told them were to look for junior terrorist #2.
wow...
The U.S. Govenrment after spending trillions spying on law abiding Americans, missed the junior Boston bomb terrorist who had to use a Walmart chicken cooker bombs.
“who says they didn’t know???”
That’s what I keep asking. There were so many indicators out there, the US Govt had to know that these guys were up to no good. So why didn’t the US do anything?
What I believe the Russians suggested is that the US authorities were running them as US agents. They got away with all that because the US thought they were OUR terrorists. When they bombed the marathon, the CIA or whoever was running them must have really needed to change their underwear!
But that explains why they were left alone and no leads from the Russians were ever followed.
NSA has been repurposed to protect the Feds from the peeps.
