I heard his interview some time ago where he discussed the history of his “faith”.

Basically, he said that his wife steered him into religion or faith (as a condition of their relationship), and that they were sold on Mormonism because of their emphasis on family. He recalled some specific instance where he was impressed by examples set by a family of Mormons (not missionaries).

So, I do not believe that Beck ever left the church because based upon what I heard him say, he never joined it.

As to what he knows about their theology in light of the obvious controversies between mainstream denominations and Joseph Smith teachings, it is extremely difficult for me buy into the notion that he is simply ignorant.

I think, being a recovering alcoholic, it was probably the Mormon prohibition on alcohol that appealed to him. There’s no temptation for him in those social circles.
