Retirement Will Kill You
Teddy Roosevelt once said the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing. Recent research suggests he may have been more right than he knew: Lifes best prize might actually extend life itself.
Our common perception is that retirement is a time when we can relax and take better care of ourselves after stressful careers. But what if work itself is beneficial to our health, as several recent studies suggest?
One of them, by Jennifer Montez of Harvard University and Anna Zajacova of the University of Wyoming, examined why the gap in life expectancy between highly educated and less-educated Americans has been growing so rapidly. (I have explored this topic in several previous columns, and have also agreed to be co-chairman of a National Academy of Sciences panel that will delve into it in more detail.)
Examining the growing educational gradient in life expectancy from 1997 to 2006, Montez and Zajacova focused on white women ages 45 to 84. In addition to differential trends in smoking by education, they concluded that among these women employment was, in and of itself, an important contributor. The life expectancy of less-educated women was being shortened by their lower employment rates compared with those of highly educated women.
The researchers tried to test whether the problem was that less-educated people had worse health, and therefore couldnt work. But they found that the contribution of employment to diverging mortality across education levels is at least partly due to the health benefits derived from employment.
Unhealthy Retirement
Researchers at the Institute of Economic Affairs in the U.K. have also recently identified ...

Life can be complicated. So it turns out for OMB Director Peter Orszag, who, just weeks before getting engaged to ABC correspondent Bianna Golodryga, became a new father -- via his ex-girlfriend.
Doing work for oneself is both mentally rewarding and simultaneously Galtish in that the Feds haven’t figured out how to tax work one does for oneself.
I retired three years ago but my old customers still call.
a lifetime EBT card is the “equalizer”
The rest of you in the private sector will get government gang banged till ya drop dead..
Work flows to the competent.
Retirement will kill you? What about sitting home on your a** all day on welfare?
I find most retired people to be quite active as they are use to having to get up and do things and would be bored doing nothing. Stay at home moms aren’t bringing home the paycheck but are working.
I don’t think it’s retirement, it’s laziness that will kill you.
Depends on what you consider retirement. My dad just tore up his calf a bit riding his bicycle. peeled some skin when he slipped on the pedals. He is 85 and a knee replaced in February.
I’m looking forward to my retirement in 4 years.
So the gov’t will take your retirement money and hold it for you for your own good?
I’ll work just as long as the govt workers work.....they retiring with their obscene pensions and benefits while we private industry workers have to keep trudging on, just doesn’t seem very “fair”.....
this agrees with what I have observed thoughout my life.
I have lost track of how many people have dropped dead that I’ve known not long after they retired.
Still working at 72. Finished my BA last year (summa cum laude). Been a member of the Texas State Guard for the last four years. I still work 6 or 7 days a week. I got big medical bills, but I ain’t quitting yet.
That phrase was on a whiteboard in a lady’s office that she was moved into. The previous occupant wrote it and had been long gone to another job.
She had no clue what it meant or the history behind it. She is in early 60s.
A bud of mine had the same problem. He offered himself as a consultant for a small fee. Some of his former customers hired him. The others quit calling.
These Progressives can be so hypocritical .... UN says to eat bugs and insects (like starving Ethiopians) but does not have bug and insect meals available or mandated, Bloomberg wants to ban all guns but is wealthy enough and holds a position where armed thugs are supplied or purchased, and I’m sure this dude will retire at 50 with everything he has managed to steal.
