The revelation that the National Security Agency is tracking every phone call each American makes, and broadly mining internet data puts President Obama at the center of yet another controversy. He and supporters in the Republican leadership, not Edward Snowden, are making themselves villains.
Two sets of issues are central. Do NSA practices strike a reasonable balance between the threats posed by global terrorism and right to privacy? Are these the least intrusive necessary? Are safeguards against abuse adequate?
Will Edward Snowden be thrown in jail for revealing classified information under the Espionage Act or other statutes?
The president argues the nation needs to strike a balance between security and liberty. As with free speech--you cant yell "fire" in a movie theater--the right to privacy is not absolute.
However, if Americans are going to have a reasoned discussion, they must know what the government is up to, especially when it collects broad information that could be used to paint a sophisticated picture of each Americans political leanings, sexual orientation and flavor of ice cream they prefer. The president cant have it both ways--engage in an informed dialogue but not reveal the practices that need to be discussed....

Yea, I wuz reading about that earlier 2Day. Hence the comment.
That the US is hacking Chinese networks is likely not real newz, but Snowden seems to have more shoes to drop, so we'll see just what he is over time.
The Jury is still out....
what is this that hear abotu snowden giving out hte names of cia agents overseas? Has anyoen heard anythign about this? IF he is doign htis- it rasises what he’s doen to a whiolwe new level which very well could include a charge of treason- Whereas simpyl releassign certain ifnformation wouldn’t have, when it specifically taRGets our people and makes them a marked target overseas in enemy terroritory, then you are talkign a whole new level of whatever-
I’ve only just sorta heard this- not true IF this is the case opr not?
I'm with you. His employment record and activities needs deep scouring. He could have been feeding China for a while before moving to Booz Allen for a short time and then taking the fast boat to China. This guy merits no trust at all.
PS Your comment on the ex-servicemen was quite apt.
I think that’s Glenn Greenwald, the reporter at the Guardian, that they’re referring to.
He sounds like an Oath Keeper. Any out there?
Obama administration: more criminal than public servant.
Well, metadata is more than enough. But I'm not sure where I stand on this one.
I'm glad he blew the whistle on this, yet he's seeking assylum where Russia may welcome him into their country.
Are we in The Twilight Zone here?
No one's claiming they violate the law.
The problem is that the law is bad and must go. In my opinion, you're on the wrong side in this fight. There are ways to fight terrorism without making all of us suspects.
Why don't you see that?
Hearing "megadata" is a dog whistle that the speaker doesn't really know what he's saying.

After reading your endless comments on this topic, I have to wonder - who do you trust in our current government? I’m honestly curious. I read about the families of the Seal Team re: extortion 17 and how they went to Rubio, before he outed himself as a tool, and were all but dismissed.
I just can’t imagine who anyone would/could trust with such information. I know your argument regarding his oath and all that, and that is not what I’m curious about, I am only wondering who you would go to IF you had information that was damning. Thanks
Sigh; we already have! At the airport yesterday I was in the long cattle line of TSA; shoes off, hands up, body scan. As I looked around at the hundreds of us in line, ALL I could think of what that yes, the stinky al queda *sp* has won. It is so disheartening.
do they think he is just talking crap? Or do they think he is actually representign hwat snowden has told him? I know the reporters at the guardian can be skethcy at itmes- but it kinda sounded liek the reporter was staging soemthign snowden had told him? Not sure htough
With Zer0 and his minions in charge, we've been deep within the Twilight Zone for ~ 5 years.
I always make sure I know what is the shortest direction to Mecca so I can be properly oriented when bending over to do the shoe thing.
Call it what it is; Jihad. Tea Partiers are NOT into Jihad.
Are you saying the government is NOT spying on all of us? Not one government official has said Snowden made any of this up.
I find it odd that the government would get pissed off at someone for saying they’re doing something that they’re not doing.
Dang, that didn’t cross my mind at the time! Good tip :)
I’m referring to MegaData as being the content which they are likely taking too - what are they going to store at the new repository in Utah?
JimRob, I guess.
If you have to ask, then it is obvious you haven't read many of my comments. I don't trust liberals, libertarians or most republicans.
, I am only wondering who you would go to IF you had information that was damning. Thanks
Certainly not China, but then I was told that stealing was illegal, unethical and immoral. Ever wonder if he contacted Ron Paul?
