European lawmakers threatened on Tuesday to unpick data-sharing agreements with the United States, reacting furiously to reports that U.S. authorities have accessed emails and other personal data from leading Internet companies.
The news has forced European governments to explain whether they let Washington spy on their citizens or benefited from snooping that would be illegal at home.
In a heated debate in the European Parliament, lawmakers complained that for a decade they had yielded to U.S. demands for access to European financial and travel data and said it was now time to re-examine the deals and to limit data access.
Some members of the European Parliament said they felt cheated after the reports about PRISM.
Sophie in 't Veld, a Dutch liberal, said the PRISM spying program highlighted not only U.S. failings but also political inertia among European leaders who she said had known about the scale of U.S. data access.

When does it reach the point that America is the world’s pariah and ostensibly a target for international militaries? Hell, Rome was overrun by the Huns and the Goths and essentially collapsed from within. Perhaps the enemies are already inside the gates.
I am glad they are livid. I am livid too. Somebody has to stop the abuses.
This has been done since clinton if not even earlier. Not sure why it is getting all this attention now.
Because the liberal media got rattled by it.
Good they need to be!
Um, their own governments are participating in majors ways. The US isn’t the only violators here. There are data centers in England, Germany, Italy, Turkey, and others.
“This has been done since clinton if not even earlier. “
Spying on citizens? Since after WWII.
In part because they’re in the database themselves
if we aren't already, we will be once the $2 billion data mining compund in Utah come on line.
The US KGB is collecting dirt on every one of them to be used as needed. They are collecting dirt on members of Congress and US citizens, too.
The USKGB’s abuse of modern technology makes for quite a honey pot machinery. It’s global and without limit - the pesky rule of law and ethics.
Collecting? No, they already have it. At least on the important ones. One thing you can bank on is that no one is allowed to hold any position of significant power without being thoroughly currupted and ready to blackmail.
Just one more step in alienating our one time friends and allies.
I recall a story years ago that claimed the UK gov’t monitors US calls and the US gov’t monitors UK calls. Then they exchange any interesting info, supposedly the idea was getting around legal protections for either state.

RAF Menwith Hill, England. Largest site, but there are several others including RAF Chicksands and RAF Feltwell.
Yes. And I am CERTAIN that if someone in power wants PRISM to find evidence that someone -anyone- is a "dirty damned crook or pervert" the evidence will be forthcoming.
Absolutely solid, unimpeachable and unquestionable evidence of any crime or perverted act that pleases them to create from whole cloth.
That’s it! I recall those weird buildings. I was trying to find it the other day when the PRISM story hit, it drowned out all the searches.
From wiki:
In 3 November 1999 the BBC reported that they had confirmation from the Australian Government of the existence of a powerful “global spying network” codenamed Echelon, that can eavesdrop on every single phone call, fax or e-mail, anywhere on the planet” with Britain and the United States as the chief protagonists. They confirmed that Menwith Hill was “linked directly to the headquarters of the US National Security Agency (NSA) at Fort Meade in Maryland.”
