Russia gears up to pass 'gay propaganda' ban

OSCOW — Russian lawmakers prepared Tuesday to pass a harsh law introducing stiff fines and jail terms for people who promote homosexual "propaganda" to minors, a measure critics fear will be used to justify the repression of gays amid rising homophobia in the country.

The Duma lower house was expected to give final approval to the bill banning "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations" to minors by Russians and foreigners as well as media organisations.

The controversial bill would make it an offence to say that gay relationships are equal to heterosexual ones.

...

If individuals use media or Internet for such "propaganda" they can be fined up to 100,000 rubles ($3,000), while organisations can be fined up to one million rubles and can be closed down for up to 90 days.

The bill also targets foreigners, apparently because international gay rights activists such as Britain's Peter Tatchell have regularly travelled to Russia to support gay pride events.

It says that foreigners who use media or the Internet for propaganda can be fined up to 100,000 rubles and can also be held in police cells for up to 15 days and be deported.

Rights activists and Western governments have repeatedly criticised the bill.

Wasn't there a story a few days ago about how our State Department was actively supporting homosexuality around the world? It looks like they'll get fined and jailed in Russia soon.

If you’re on the same side of a human rights question as Vladimir Putin, it may be time for a little soul-searching.

Yup. I find it harder by the day to hate Putin. The guy is far more American than most Americans. And knowing he really isn’t a good guy makes it all the more hard to deal with.

Odd that, in these latter days, the United States has to turn to Moscow for an example of sanity.

Wouldn’t that be a dream. One-by-one, as the Globalists from State enter Russia, they get to experience their justice system.

Strange isn’t it the Russians have more respect for their people than the USA does..We have a lot of commies here running this government but they want the disgusting trash to have it all even if it is immoral..Anything to run this country into the ground..

Putin is a despot. Some of the love he gets on FR bothers me. But the article is interesting none the less.

Guess JF’n Kerry, our poor excuse for a Sec. of State, won’t be welcome in Moscow since he stated that the goal of the USA is to have homosexual rights accepted all over the globe. Of course, he wasn’t in a Muslim country or Russia when he said that.

Protecting young children from homosexual pedophiles is a bad thing then?

Can we take our money from the sale of our houses as well as our 401Ks to Russia? We could buy a nice little cottage in the country and not have to put up with sodomists.

Putin isn’t so bad if you don’t cross him. He’s probably much better than Obama.

Poland would probably be a better option. There the educational system is run by the Catholic Church.

A corollary to “nobody’s perfect,” should be “few are perfectly awful.”

This policy certainly looks good to me considering where we have gone.

Ironically Edward Snowden just got an offer to live in Russia and I heard he donated to Ron Paul campaign, so I assume he is for ‘marraige equality’ etc.

Agreed, he’s certainly a despot, and (contrary to some of the support he’s getting from some Freepers here) this story is an example of his despotism. A free nation responds to propaganda with truth, not speech codes.

France doesn't want that queer crap either. Who would have ever thought the U.S. would be so far behind the times. Compared to other countries, we're becoming the neanderthals.
The other countries are quickly becoming more socially advanced than we are. They "get it" when it comes to queers and austerity.
