She is winning because the judges don't even see her supposed disability.

I’ve known two women with the same issue, no forearm as a result of a birth defect. One was my mother’s good friend and the other my sister-in-law’s grandmother. Both were spunky, independent, marvelous women with a fabulous sense of humor. They both were raised by families that didn’t allow the difference to interfere with their expectations. They both also, had great smiles.

Wrong. She’s getting the sympathy vote.
And she’ll probably win Miss America for the same reason.
These pageants aren’t what they used to be - they’re pretty much a joke now. Twenty-five years ago, this woman wouldn’t stand a chance of winning. And rightfully so.
