Bay Area elementary school holds toy-gun exchange
The SideshowBy Mike Krumboltz | The Sideshow 3 hrs ago
Strobridge Elementary School in Hayward, Calif., held a toy-gun exchange program over the weekend, according to a report from CBS-5 San Francisco.
Inspired by gun buy-back programs that focus on getting weapons off the streets, Principal Charles Hill felt a similar program for toys made a lot of sense.
"Playing with toys guns, saying 'I'm going to shoot you,' desensitizes them," said Hill, "so, as they get older, it's easier for them to use a real gun."
Students who participated were given books in exchange for their toy guns. They were also enrolled in a raffle to win a bike, the event's grand prize.
CBS-5 spoke with parents who had brought their children to trade in their guns. One mother said she was always against toy guns, but she noted that her son felt left out when he saw the other kids playing with theirs.
Some of the guns shown in the CBS-5 report were clearly fake, but others that were exchanged might easily have passed for real weapons.
Police Officer Braydon Wilson, who was at the toy-gun exchange to talk to students about safety, told CBS-5 that sometimes kids will paint their toy guns to look like real ones. Other times, owners of real guns will paint the tip of the gun barrel orange to make it appear like a toy, according to Wilson.
The Daily Review spoke with Yih-Chau Chang, spokesperson for Responsible Citizens of California, a group that educates people about gun rights.

We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey! teachers! leave the kids alone!
All in all you're just another brick in the wall.
All in all you're just another brick in the wall.
Etc.............
One would have thought this was from The Onion..... no luck... Eyes rolling.
I would have happily traded a broken (I had seven siblings; all our toys were broken) toy gun for a book about guns at that age. I was a geek before it was cool. Then again, nothing was cool back then except the refrigerator (when it worked).
From my cold dead hands!
Holy $hit and WTF?! My son is outside playing war with the neighborhood kids right now. I am working hard to "desensitize" my kids (in context) precisely so they can learn the proper respect and training to be around and use them safely. Someday I'll also teach them about other dangerous machines, like automobiles.
Toy guns might send the wrong message but explaining homo sex in kindergarten is just fine...
I know. Let’s have a violent movie exchange program in Hollyweird!! Actors who have parts in violent movies can trade them in for parts in a musical or something like that.
Better have a turn in program for easy bake ovens. Those incandescent bulbs are destroying the environment. Add to the list dolls and action hero figures as they fuel sexist stereotypes. Perhaps the kids should also be made to wear mittens at school least they use their fingers to make gun gestures.
I’m completely against toy guns. Guns are not toys, and children should never, ever be taught that they are.
Instead, they should be given gun safety lessons with real (unloaded) guns by their parents at the earliest possible time, and repeatedly thereafter. And also at the earliest possible time, they should be given (or allowed to earn the money for), their own gun, and brought to the range under parental supervision and taught to shoot it, and allowed to practice as much as possible, until they are completely familiar with it and every safe procedure in handling it.
ESPECIALLY if they are girls.
Girls in parentally supervised gun clubs don’t vote Democrat.
I swear these liberal leftist morons are all mentally ill. No joke.
Someone inform master idiot Principal Charles Hill, for years now, kids seldom play with toy guns anymore and are busy blowing up and mass murdering people while using video games..
Where has this guy been? Hiding? In a drunken stupor?
Hey, you’re forgetting the free taxpayer condoms.....
I’d chew a bunch of pop tarts into the shape of a gun and turn them in.
ARE VERBOTEN!!!
Turn them all in children and we'll read you the tale of one of the world's greatest leaders, Unca Georgie Stalin.
Remember the lesson for today, and everyday is:
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL
MICHAEL MOORE IS THE SMARTEST MAN ON THE PLANET
CELEBRITIES KNOW MORE THAN ANYBODY OUTSIDE OF HOLLYWOOD
CHRISTIANS BAD, MUSLIMS GOOD
PEOPLE WHO PROVIDE JOBS ARE EVIL AND GREEDY
ILLEGAL INVADERS ON WELFARE ARE GOOD
THE GOVERNMENT IS THE HIGHEST AUTHORITY
That is all, believe in what we say or we will blow you up just like in the Global Warming PSA video we watched last week!
Eat yer frickin pudding
Stoopit
AND pencils cause bad poetry.
Principal Charles Hill and the other liberal idiots in that school should be fired for incompetence, among other things. What a waste of labor, taxpayers should demand a refund of their wages.
The most popular section of toy stores for boys include shooting toys. Half the arcade machines involve shooting games. Many popular TV shows and movies involve shooting. Turning in a few squirtguns is not going to change the majority of boys into pansies. Then there are a lot of parents and grandparents who will counter these liberals by showing kids shooting skills. I bought my granddaughters squirtguns, and I know they won’t turn into psychos - that’s what liberals become.
I’m assuming Yih-Chau Chang is an immigrant. He obviously understands America (and children) better than this moron principal does.
PING!
Oh, yes, and . . .
Leftist anti-gun indoctrination/generational disarmament Nanny State PING!
Public schools = child abuse.
Jeepers...
The coolest Toy Guns I owned as a Child consisted of an M1 Carbine and a Tripod Mounted Machine Gun. When we played Army, we really played Army.
Many of today’s Parents, if you can all them that, are spineless weasels who have forgotten the joy and happiness that their own Childhood experiences gave them.
When I was eight years old I got my first .22 Rifle and a single shot .410 Shotgun. For over 50 years I have been a Gun Owner and to this day I have killed exactly one less person than Ted Kennedy did using his infamous Oldsmobile.
Maybe they should have a Toy Car Exchange.
