SWAT-clad man uses assault rifle in chaotic Santa Monica shooting spree

A semi-automatic assault rifle is again being tied to a US mass shooting, this one a chaotic series of events led by a body-armor-clad man who killed four and wounded five people before being shot and killed by police in a college library in the iconic beachside city of Santa Monica, Calif.

The attack marked the first major mass shooting since a bipartisan gun control bill failed in the US Senate in April. The shooting may help efforts to revive the debate about gun control, as well as put focus on ongoing legislative action in some states around allowing students and faculty to carry weapons on campuses to help thwart active shooters who target what are usually so-called "gun free" zones.

AR-15s and other semi-automatic rifles are used in far fewer homicides than hand guns, but have become symbolic of America’s struggle to contain violent and public mass shootings. They’re immensely popular because of their ease-of-use, accuracy and customizability. Critics argue that the rifles are designed to be militaristic and offensive. Fans of the guns say they have no more lethality than a standard hunting rifle.

It's all the fault of the "assault rifle", not the criminal...

Anti-gun editorial masquerading as news -- instead of reporting the news, the author uses it to advocate gun control...

The Christian Science Monitor was supposed to be a reputable newspaper...

CA already has all the things the gun grabbers want to inflict on the nation, as far as I am aware, including formal registration of defensive rifles. But it didn’t stop this particular crime. So why is the CS Monitor using the incident as a reason to push expansion of the same failed policies elsewhere? Answer: because the facts don’t matter in the pursuit of this particular agenda.

P.S. the AR-15 is not an assault rifle. Not that the author cares. (Ignorance in the media about firearms is deep and willful.)

When you have a place like Santa Monica, California, which has no restrictions on guns whatsoever, of course, these things are bound to happen.

This is really sad about the Monitor. I have no idea what the editor is like but I know some Christian Scientists and they are all very conservative and do not like or vote for Obama.

Shooter must be a moslem since we’ve heard zero about him.

IMHO, assault is an action, not a device. How I loathe the left.

Apparently the shooter was killed, but they say they don’t have info as to the motive.

Gunman Kills 4 in California Before He Is Killed

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/08/us/santa-monica-college-shooting.html?_r=0

“Four people were killed and five wounded on Friday morning as a gunman, dressed in black and carrying an assault rifle, strode across Santa Monica firing at people, cars, a public bus and buildings before being shot and killed by the police at the Santa Monica College Library, the authorities said. “

The shooting may help efforts to revive the debate about gun control...

Americans could really squelch this "debate" if we could convince the local "news media" Ken and Barbies to report that all of the victims were heterosexual conservatives and members of the local TEA Party.

in the article, the only description was from a witness who said “mid 20’s with corn rows in his hair” but that could be anyone. so other than that, nothing in the article.

News media is popularizing the notion of using “assault weapons” for mass killings. They’re talking the killers into it.
