Speaking at a fundraising dinner held in Silicon Valley for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee on Thursday night, President Barack Obama said that the government should play a critical role in creating the nations broadband infrastructurea role similar to the one the government plays in building roads and bridges.
[G]overnment has a critical role to play in funding science and research, in creating the infrastructurenot only the old infrastructure of roads and bridges and ports, but the new infrastructure of smartgrids and broadband, Obama said.
Broadband is the medium through which many Americans now get Internet access delivered to their homes and businesses.
Obama made his remarks shortly before 8:00 p.m. Pacific time, and shortly after The Guardian and The Washington Post reported on a National Security Agency programcodenamed PRISMthat allowed the government to tap directly into the servers of major Internet companies such as Google, AOL, Yahoo, Skype and Facebook.

Sure so the NSA/CIA/FBI can install their own packet sniffing technologies along the lines to ensure that domestic surveillance goes strong.
FUBO! The government needs a haircut.
We already blew a trillion on “infrastructure” Might as well give unions a little more work.
F U B O!
Private contractors build roads.
If they were allowed to build them out of pocket and charge tolls for use, then perhaps things would be more rational.
Bingo
In the current hi-tech data snooping scandal climate, to even suggest this now is inconceivable. We are talking reality disconnect here.
Wow, hussein calling for bigger government, more spending, more power, control and information. .. I’m shocked, shocked I say! (I don’t really have to put the sarcasm tag on that, do I?) How about this? FUBO! (Not sarcasm)
What a meaningful statement! Let’s snoop in everyone’s closet! Better to blackmail and threaten you into submission!
In Obama’s eyes, there is no end to the entitlements.
Seems to me that state and federal fuel taxes should be the money pipeline for highways.
Yeh, so government can COMPLETELY botch it like they do with road construction...
After all these decades, should we really trust the federal government with that? They’ve used it to put a lot of private industry out of business and manipulate the economy. And we get a bunch of rotting infrastructure as a reward at the end of the day.
I want 0bozo to wear a head cam and microphone 24/7 that is webcast so we can monitor what he is up to.
I wonder why he didn’t compare it to the current government infrastructure in the area of communications? I refer of course to the Post Office which is a constant source of problems and losing money.
How is the government service on that communication industry?
The better to collect all your data said the spider to the fly!
let the BIG providers do the same
crap that means there will be pot holes, endless delays, and a ridiculous amount of money wasted. Thanks O but I’d rather not
That’s BS. The Internet is new a commercial good enterprise. Inviting the government into the market will bring their demands for control into play and make it an unsecure medium for transporting and transmitting ideas.
I think very speech he has ever given has that phrase in it.
