This nation is headed for a break-up that will make the dissolution of the former Soviet Union look like an amicable parting of ways.

I keep wondering whether this could happen. I know, from what I read, that there is a growing and festering antipathy towards the federal government. If this is so, some event, perhaps related to intrusions into people's private lives such as outlined here, might set off episodes of isolated violence and gosh knows what could follow.

I think secession ala the Soviet Union is a best case scenario, that was more or less peaceful. I doubt that will happen here.
