MANCHESTER, Tenn. - Hundreds gathered to rally against a forum scheduled to discuss American Muslim civil rights.
The group came armed with messages and signs about First Amendment rights and free speech after hearing about the open forum through talk radio and social media.
The forum was described by Bill Killian, U.S. Attorney of East Tennessee and guest speaker, as an educational effort about civil rights laws as they relate to freedom of religion, specifically the Muslim religion.
The forum also informed the public of the federal laws regarding civil rights and the consequences of violating those laws.
However, critics see the forum as an effort to crackdown on anti-Muslim speech.
The forum comes on the heels of a Facebook post by a local commissioner that showed a shotgun and the words "How to wink at a Muslim."
Coffee County and Manchester have garnered national and worldwide attention since.
