So he punked out on having a republican in office for longer.

Why would a Democrat appoint a Republican?

Obama must have given him the tongue twirl on their last date.

He could have set the special election for the same day as the 2013 general election, when he (Christie) is running for re-election. But them his Democratic opponent for Governor would be on the same ticket with Cory Booker (the likely Democratic candidate for Senator), and Christie didn’t want that.

“So he punked out on having a republican in office for longer.”
***************************************************************

I think that this: (”...a decision that gets voters the quickest possible say on who will represents them but also preserves Christie as the top attraction on November’s ballot....”) is the main reason.

It makes Christie (the “it’s all about me” New Jersey governor) the center of attention for November, which is important to “His Self-centeredness”. It also make Cory Booker the odds on favorite to be the Democrat candidate for that Senate seat (removes the smoke-filled room aspects which could have yielded someone other than Booker). So that will make Obama happy.

So Christie, Obama and Booker will all be pleased as punch and the New Jersey taxpayers will be left with the bill for a separate special (i.e., not November) election which won’t be cheap.

He still must appoint someone to warm the seat.

Chrispie has a list of options? Give me a break. He is marching to the beat of the Kenyan Drum, make no mistake about it. His first call had to be to his new blow-buddie in the white hut. “What do I do now Barry?”

EXACTLY what he did. He just handed the seat to the Dems so he can keep his Gov seat.
