New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie called Tuesday for a special election later this year to decide who will fill the seat of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg, though he did not say whom he might appoint in the interim.
The Republican governor, during a press conference in Trenton, said he wants to make sure New Jersey voters have a "voice and a choice"
He set the primary for Aug. 13 and the general election for Oct. 16.
The announcement ended some -- but not all -- of the speculation about Christie's handling of the open seat. Lautenberg, a Democrat and the oldest member of the U.S. Senate, died Monday after complications from viral pneumonia at age 89. While colleagues paid tribute to the legacy of the World War II veteran, political observers launched into heavy speculation on how the popular Republican governor would move to fill the position.
Christie faced conflicting state laws in deciding when to have the election. He could have waited until November 2014, or possibly this November. But Christie said Tuesday it was worth the expense to the state to hold a special election earlier.
"The citizens of New Jersey need to have an elected representative to the United States Senate and have it as soon as possible," he said.

Ann was disgusted and crossed Christie off her dance card at that point.
Christie's strategy should maximize the chances of a Republican Senate seat pickup in the special election in October, maximize Christie's vote total in November, and maximize the Republican vote for NJ state Senate and Assembly elections in November.
The Democrats should not be happy. They have been put into the position of arguing that less choice is best for NJ voters. Christie's voter choice argument is also a dig by Christie at what the NJ SC did when Robert "The Torch" Torricelli resigned and the SC let the state Democrat party substitute Lautenberg on the ballot. If this works it was a brilliant move by Christie.

I bet some polling locations which were tolerable on past warm June primary elections or municipal run offs , will be hot / without air conditioning in August.

Heard a radio ad yesterday about two New Jerseyans running for state offices. The candidates indicated they were fed up with the RINO faux conservatism and did a good job describing the BS game RINOs play.

The strong political move would be to appoint a Republican as the interim Senator until November 2014, which would guarantee the Republicans would hold that Senate vote for 17 months and then have a candidate running as essentially the incumbant.
The “noble” move would be to appoint an Republican and then hold the special election in November 2013. This would enable the people of New Jersey to vote on the senator and not cost the taxpayers extra, since they are already holding a state election in November 2013. However, that mean that a popular democrat might be running at the top of ticket when he is running for re-election as governor.
Instead he is going to spend $24million in taxpayer money to have an election in mid-October, 3 weeks before the regular state election. He manages to sell out fellow Republicans and stick taxypayers with a wasteful bill, merely to further his own political interests.
