The War on Sleep (soldiers who fight without fatigue)
Slate ^ | 05/29/2013 | William Saletan

All over the world, scientists are experimenting on soldiers to keep them awake beyond the limits of normal endurance. Researchers are engineering, and militaries are deploying, chemically enhanced troops. Of all the superpowers we’ve imagined, the one that has turned out to be most attainable—so attainable we’re already using it—is the ability to go without sleep. Much of this research, which focuses on a drug called modafinil, is openly sponsored and supervised by military agencies. The United States leads the pack, conducting experiments

What are the long term problems this may bring up? Sleep deprivation can do bad things to the mind. I for one do not like this at all.

They can sleep in formation, like all the rest of us learned to do.

They’ve been doing this a long time. During Vietnam they issued speed and other choice drugs.

I think there will be a lot of people going on autopilot and the friendly fire casualties will increase dramatically.

Actually amphetamines were routinely provided to the military in World War II.

Not so much, suprisingly.

Suicides? Maybe.

Externally directed violence vs. internally directed violence.

Sleep deprivation, even with chemicals, is a Bad Thing(tm).

What is the other hand doing?

Interesting article, and I have to say that I do not like the experimentation with out troops, but when are people going to wake the F up.

Going back to Carter, we could have stopped this the advance of Islamists. Carter was and still is a wus. I am not going to be partisan in my attacks. What did Reagan do after the Marine barracks was bombed? He send in the navy and used a battleship to pound lebanon. He stopped too soon. What did GHW Bush do in Iraq as the Republican Guard was on the run out of Kuwait. He stopped too soon. What did G W Bush do? He allowed a war to continue when we had victory. What is Obama doing? He is making friends with our enemies.

Rip Fuel from GNC did the magic; ephedrine and other stuff will get you through midrat-midrat-midrat. Went through 120 pill bottle just about every 30 days . Good stuff.

Wonder how their adrenals will make out with this. Sounds like a great way to win Adrenal Fatigue.

Just get into commercial fishing for a while. Did 6.5 days with no sleep once but I was healthy, 19 and I didn’t drink. Felt pretty good as long as I was busy but slept for 26 hours straight when I got home.

I've only got one adrenal gland left these days. I sorta splashed the left kidney and associated parts and the spleen.

I have never experienced adrenal fatigue.

I would just skip the drugs and take a nap during morning and evening formations. It's not that hard to sleep while standing at parade rest. Besides, the band or the senior NCO wakes you up when you have to move.

Throughout modern history, the military has been a petridish for human experimentation because they are more likely (in fact trained specifically) to not reject orders from superiors. Fertile ground for scientists to work in.

I retired from driving a big truck two years ago and I haven't had anything resembling 4 hrs consecutive sleep without help in all this time.

I think we're killing ourselves with work.

When we worked the Perfume and Cua Viet rivers during Tet 68 we were issued pills, “no sleep” (methamphetamine) and “no sh*t” pills. Both were good for 24 hours. The operations lasted for 3 - 4 days each and we could not go below decks because we were under continuous fire. We just hoped the “no sh*t” pills wore off before the “no sleep” pills.
We could catch up on sleep on the way back to Da Nang.

What is the alternative, fall asleep in the middle of a firefight?
