GOP Dilemma: Draw New Voters Without Irking Base
AP ^ | May 27, 2013 | AP, via WMAL.com

The Republican Party, having lost the popular vote in five of the last six presidential elections, confronts a dilemma that's easier to describe than to solve: How can it broaden its appeal to up-for-grabs voters without alienating its conservative base?

There's no consensus yet on how to do it. With the next election three years away, Republicans are tiptoeing around policy changes even as they size up potential candidates who range from tea party heroes to pragmatic governors in Republican- and Democratic-leaning states.

(snip)

While they circle that conundrum, Republican leaders hope for a charismatic nominee in the mold of Clinton or Ronald Reagan. They yearn for someone who can appeal to less ideological voters without prompting conservatives to feel their principles are losing primacy.

BTW, exit polls are not terribly exacting ~ everybody knows that, no one more than Algore and John Kerry!

Did you realize that over the last 30 years UK has had the greatest level of emigration in its history WITH MOST THAT heading for the United States.

Do you have any sources for that assertion. Here are some facts not assertions For example.

Australia has consistently been the most popular destination country for British emigrants over the last 20 years. Other key destinations for British emigrants include Spain, the USA, France, Germany, Canada and New Zealand. An estimated 4.7 million UK-born people live abroad with the largest stocks in Australia, the USA, Canada, Spain and Ireland. The UK ranks eighth highest in the world in terms of the number of its nationals living abroad (World Bank, 2011)

We are in worst shape because we are being colonized by the Third World. At least the UK recognizes that they must decrease legal immigration, especially from non-EU countries.

The problem is that the non-Hispanic white population has declined and will continue to decline in the future...We have entered a era of tribal politics. Obama received 95% of the black vote, 73% of the Asian vote, and 71% of the Hispanic vote. Obama's reelection demonstrated that we have reached a tipping point in terms of national electoral politics

So, what's the solution?

Any candidate who won 95% of the WHITE vote would be a king.

Any candidate who won 71%-73% of the white vote would be unbeatable.

The problem is NOT the decline to 66% (although that IS the cause of many OTHER problems).

The problem is that the blacks, browns, red(skins) and yellows have gone tribal, along with the rest of the 21st Century world, and the whites have not..yet.

Go Right, Go White, or go home. That's the future for any party that replaces the GOP, which is basically already dead on the national level.

Appeal to the Christian vote for real, not just with lip service.

Arlington is run by folks like Walter Tejada (D), Chairman of the Board. Arlington is a sanctuary county and refused to join the Secure Communities program.

And MD is the same way only becoming even more Dem.

The third-world is simply more obvious ~ not more numerous. Mexico is a different case ~ they're really asking for it. Last time they decided to really draw our attention they lost California and the Southwest!

We need more space for deep water ports ~ they've got the territory ~ all of Baja, and their West Coast. They didn't need that anyway.

They know better (historically speaking)

Arlington is so full of federal police it really doesn’t matter what puke Tajeda says. The county government is there for a single reason ~ make sure the big dogs get the buildings they want and preserve a couple of neighborhoods populated mostly by Brookings Institute personnel.

It's quite interesting that we have a Palestine policy, an Afghanistan policy, a Dagestan policy, and yet we have no Mexico policy.

Then isn't GWB the real villian here? He's an open borders, love-those-Mexicans nut. If he'd gone with the conservative flow and sealed that darn border and demanded EVerify that would've happened. Logic after 911 would've been to send home everyone in the country illegally....instead we've become the new Chechynan homeland.

GW was terrible on the issue as was his father. The real beginning of the problem was the 1965 Immigration Act that changed the demography of this country forever. When historians look back hundreds of years from now to describe the rise and fall of the US, they will point to the 1965 Immigration Act as the principal reason why the US fell.

I really believe that the 'pubs can do it with a message for constitutional conservatives. But they'll have to stop being the Cheap Labor Party and they'll have to care more about securing our southern border than about Afghanistan's.

Both parties have abandoned the American worker. The Chamber of Commerce has bought and owns the GOPe.

But we do have a Mexico policy ~ NAFTA. We also have a history ~ one they seem to have forgotten. Most likely they made up some fairy tale nonsense about it.

So, what's the solution?

We could start by loweriing our legal immigration numbers. We don't need 1.2 million legal immigrants annually, 87% of whom are minorities as classified by the USG and most of whom are low skilled and uneducated. 25% of the adult legal immigrants who enter annually lack even a high school degree. We don't need to import hundreds of thousands of high school dropouts annually.

During the decade that ended in 2010, we brought in more legal immigrants than anytime in our history--13.9 million. During that same period we had a net loss of 400,000 jobs.

We need lower immigration and a merit based system rather than the kinship system we now have.

The Gang of 8 bill will increase legal immigration by 50% and give amnesty immediately to 11 to 20 million illegal aliens who will in turn sponsor more than 30 million of their relatives thru chain migration, i.e., family reunification.

Polls are always questioned. We had many here who questioned the poll numbers prior to the election saying they oversampled Dems even though that is not the way they are done. In fact, the polls proved to be pretty much on target along with Nate Silver of the NYT. Denial just ain’t a river in Egypt.

True but slightly over 4 million dims died so it was a wash... so we are now back to the gop/e and voter apathy and leftist voter fraud in one form or another.

I am well aware of everything that you mentioned but 73% of the populace are still white... and some large percentage of that white vote did not vote. There are some new untapped voters for the gop. Now I happen to know that true Conservative ideology... when explained in the manner that Reagan explained it... works... and it crosses the lines of color, religion and almost every other false barrier put between Americans by the ruling elite. Cruz and Rand have shown that it even works in the Senate.

When you or anyone for that matter... mentions diversity... we are talking a leftist buzzword for non-white. I am not separating us and dividing us into race, color and creed... the left... obama... and the media are... and “some” of us are using their new English word meanings. Hell... I am going to fight these sumbiches whenever and wherever I can and I will not give up or give in.

hardly ~ Dems die at a slightly higher rate than Reps ~ been that way since the party was founded.

Let's say 4 million Reps die (or become so disabled they can no longer vote), and 4.5 million Dems die.

That gives us a 1/2 million advantage over a 4 year period. This is probably one of the motives that keep the Democrats constantly focused on voter registration.

Over an 8 year period that'd be 1.0 million fewer Dems than Reps.

In 2007/2008 the Dems made the greatest voter registration advance in their history ~ and there are Dem professionals who've said they felt like they'd pushed the limits of possible Dem registration. In the end they got 69,000,000 votes ~ the record of any party!

By 2012, after 4 years Obama lost 4 million votes ~ which is just a few less than 4.5 million who should have died. That meant they got an additional 1/2 million new voters!

In contrast, Republicans lost their usual 4 million but they got an additional 5.0 million voters simply through additional registrations.

Now that's not going to push us over the top but that's 10 times as many new voters as the Dems got!

We really need to redouble our efforts, and do that now ~ get the new Republicans in the habit of voting for Republican candidates. Best way to do that is give them candidates who are Republicans. After all, Republicans, like Democrats, when given a choice between the real deal and a fake candidate, always chose the real candidate.

Jefferson knew that BTW. So did Harry Truman.

As i've 'splained to you and Rush many times before, the polls only serve to give a trend line. that 9% response rate means you cannot, statisticaly speaking, trust them ~ which means you have to tap other sources of information to ADUST them, then tell your clients what the real answer ought to be ~ even if there's no way you can directly tap into that answer.

This is nearer augury than is all that comfortable, but as usual some pollsters came up with answers closer to the results than others ~ that doesn't mean they didn't jigger their own results to get there!

Never ever assume there are not people out there smart enough to outthink polling techniques.

66% are non-Hispanic white. The conservative message of low taxes, limited government, and fiscal discipline doesn't work with people who are feeding at the government trough. They are natural Dem constituents and the fastest growing part of the population. 47% of the people pay no income taxes and tens of millions receive EITC. We have 49 million on food stamps. 71% of blacks and 50% of Hispanics are born out of wedlock and both groups have the highest school drop out rates. We are building a permanent underclass and they will vote Dem.

Bill Richardson said Cruz is not a real Hispanic. Michael Steele was an oreo.

When you or anyone for that matter... mentions diversity... we are talking a leftist buzzword for non-white. I am not separating us and dividing us into race, color and creed... the left... obama... and the media are... and “some” of us are using their new English word meanings. Hell... Fine, but in the real world we are witnessing tribal politics. CA is the harbinger of things to come as our national demography fast approaches that of CA. And with folks like Rubio, McCain, Graham, and Flake, the final nail in our coffin is not far away. Unless we stop the persistent flow of mass immigration, no message is going to resonate except for the one of Big Giovernment.

You don't understand how polling works and why the good pollsters can be right the vast majority of the time. I have taken some statistics courses and the construction of polling samples. Internal polls are used extensively by politicians and the government. Don't underestimate their validity and usefulness.

you said it was a wash ~ but it wasn't.

Bush 2004 received 62 million

Death 2004-2008 - 4 million = 58 million

New Registrations 2008 = +1.5 million

McCain 2008 received 59.5 million

Death 2008-2012 - 4 million = 55.5 million

New Registrations 2012 = + 5.5 million

Romney = 61 million

You can go through and do the same thing on the Democrat side but with their higher death rate you'll want to stick in 4.5 million deaths rather than just 4.0 million.
