DETROIT (WWJ) - Police say one person was killed when gunfire erupted outside of a gas station on Detroit’s west side.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. Thursday at a Citgo gas station near Linwood and Davison.

A man was filling his tires with air when someone approached and tried to rob him at gunpoint, according to reports. The man pulled out a gun to defend himself and a shootout occurred. Both ended up firing at each other, with the victim chasing the suspect away from the gas station.

Police say the suspect’s body was found in an alleyway across the street from the gas station. The victim also suffered a gunshot wound, but is expected to be OK. An investigation is ongoing.

All I want to know is why the victim (the shooter) was at a Citgo gas station...owned lock, stock, and barrel by the Kommie’s in Venezuela. (Previously Chevez)

“The perp was found deflated in an alley.”

Please, use the “correct terminology,” the dead guy was not a perp, he was a “suspect.” But he’s still dead! (s)

Even though the armed robber had the drop on the armed citizen, the citizen prevailed.

Just a demonstration of the over-confidence that a bad guy gets when he thinks he's at the top of the heap. I saw a "Most Amazing" where a guy had a gun while robbing a place. He was so confident he started twiddling and playing with it while the clerk gathered the money. Almost too fast to see, a double shot rang out and both hit the floor. Second later, the clerk got up with blood on his side and looked over the counter to see the perp dead. Loose grip on the gun made it turn in his hand from the first shot and hit his finger again shooting himself in the face.

That’s why I’m glad we have both open and concealed carry.

Open carry is a good reminder that others unseen may also be armed.

As of 1 July, we will be an open carry w/o permit State. Old law was that open carry was OK, BUT per some judge’s opinion, a holster “in part, or in full concealed the weapon” which negated the open carry law and required full concealment and a CCW permit. Governor Bryant decided that the law needed changed to make sense - one of the few benefits of Obama and the gun-grabbers is that more States are coming around.

My ultimate goal would be to get rid of background checks altogether. Any man not incarcerated or on parole should be freely armed.

After all, criminals don’t pass background checks but still get guns.
