FBI Investigating LA's SWAT Team for Illegal Gun Sales
Breitbart's The Conversation ^ | May 25, 2013 | John Sexton

In 2010 the LAPD completed an investigation into alleged gun purchases made by SWAT team members for the purposes of reselling the guns at a profit. Now the FBI has been called in to determine if any laws were violated.

The investigation will attempt to determine why the LAPD's SWAT team, which has around 60 members, purchased over 300 specialized handguns from Kimber Manufacturing.

The LAPD has a longstanding agreement with Kimber which allows the company to brand weapons with LAPD insignia and market them as "identical to" the ones used by LAPD's SWAT team. On the open market these guns are worth as much as $3,500, but the LAPD purchases them under contract for around $600 each.

The allegation is that members of the SWAT team were collecting money amongst themselves to purchase additional guns at the special LAPD price. While there was no contract allowing them to do, the LA Times reports that there was a "gentleman's agreement" between the officers and the company. These extra weapons were then allegedly resold at a profit to non-SWAT officers within the LAPD and possibly to gun collectors....

PDs not run by elected Sheriffs are questionable at best. Some Sheriffs have issues too.

If they were being sold to honest people I wouldn’t have any problem with the reselling, but personal diversion of the funds rather than putting them in police or treasury coffers was just plain wrong.

I wonder why this isn’t being handled by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

It is also illegal. You can’t sell guns as a dealer which it appears they were doing without a FFL 01 license.

Maybe the BATF should be investigating the FBI for attempts to extort the LAPD.

And so it is. Well the gander should share the goose’s sauce, it’s only fair. But why do we even have to license this sort of thing. Has that cut down on the proportional number of dishonest people getting guns?

Here is another case the FBI was investigating when something went drastically wrong.

I don’t know why anyone would be surprised by this, Police Officers are the most dishonest, corrupt, morally bankrupt people I have ever met. Not sure why there would be much of an investigation:

Here are the records of guns you bought, WHO DID YOU SELL THEM TO?? Where are they?? Put your hands behind your back, you are under arrest.

****** “Do as I say, not as I do. Just like the IRS.” *****

They should include the IRS ... How were the Taxes on those Fast and Furious Weapons handled? Did the IRS look the other way? Or were those transactions Tax Exempt? If so ... who approved the deals and who gave permission to approve and to make them Tax Exempt... If they are not Tax exempt sales I’m sure that the IRS will be on that case ASAP.

Govt really needs to clean their own house before they start getting worried about Tea Party folks / s

It’s probably a mixed bag. I want to think that most of these weapons went to friends and family of the SWAT officers and that would be completely legal in most of these United States. However, I wouldn’t want to guess at how this would be seen under the draconian firearms laws of the People’s Republic of California

Holy crap $3,500 down to $600 “discount”. Sounds like the guns are ultra over-priced from the git-go. Over 80% discount shows a lot of wiggle room.
