A group of Chinese students are upset with American vice president Joe Biden, a man known for his verbal blunders, over remarks at the University of Pennsylvania's commencement ceremony on May 13.
The students have since drafted a petition and sent it to Penn president Amy Gutmann's office on May 22, asking for their letter to be delivered to the vice president.
"We have collected over 300 signatures in the past few days even without mass publicity," Zhang Tianpu, who just graduated from Penn and wrote a viral post on Renren about the issue, told us in an email. "The number is still growing as we talk."
Zhang said the University has yet to respond to his petition.
Penn said in a statement on Wednesday, "The University of Pennsylvania does not review or approve the remarks delivered by speakers at its annual Commencement ceremony. Vice President Biden's comments are entirely his own and should not be construed to reflect the views or policies of the University of Pennsylvania."
Zhang's post on Renren, which went up on May 14, has now received over 44,000 views and 700 comments

I don’t get this. I read the article. I won’t defend Biden, but these “students” are wrong headed. They’re upset about the use of the word “nation.” And they’re upset about remarks about freedom. Screw ‘em.
I was there. What my Asian acquaintances thought was lame was Biden painting Chinese students as a ‘yellow peril’ to the American class of 2013. Pretty dumb considering the high numbers of East Asians graduating that day and the high caliber of diplomates, in general. Penn, founded by Benjamin Franklin, is a rigorous, pre-professional university—Biden could never have graduated from there.

..I’m appalled at his grammar more than anything. “Different” should be differently. “free” should be freely.
Biden is 0bama’s way of mocking old white guys. That’s why he chose him as VP.

Chinese are using a hidden message. They don’t want to be seen defending the CCP since they would anticipate major backlash in response, so they utilize the PC strategy to claim that Biden is racist. The word nation is meaningless to them, but when you claim the word has a different meaning then you can say its racist without defending the CCP.
