Played at home and sung in both camps, the music of Stephen Foster was everywhere. Unfortunately, Foster had sold the rights to his songs and never profited from them. This sentimental favorite was sung, played on harmonica, fiddle and banjo, and generally mangled by everyone.

Foster: “Oh! Susanna”

On occasion, a song from one side in the conflict would be adopted by the other side, and often the lyrics would be changed. This Northern song went South, but each side had its own lyrics. The differences between these lyrics open a window into the mind sets of partisans of both sides. This is how the North sang this song.

”Battle Cry of Freedom” (Union version)

In the South the lyrics were a bit – ahem! – different.

”Battle Cry of Freedom” (Confederate version)
