Same thing happened to the Dalton Gang in Coffeyville, Kansas.
They were wiped out by armed citizens.

When we lived in Bartlesville, OK, I used to take visitors up to Coffeyville to see that perfectly delightful, very hokey exhibit. It was great fun—but the image of that little boy looking through the hole in the fence at the dead outlaws laying in a row on the ground has sort of haunted me ever since.
