The sheriff’s department had to cut 23 deputies and the entire major crimes unit after it lost a multi-million dollar federal subsidy

And a lesson here is never count on federal subsidies being continued. If you really need something figure out a way to fund it from within your local tax base. Don't expand just because the Feds give you "free money" if you can't pay for it later.

The “subsidy” was in lieu of logging. JoCo used to have vast tracts of land owned by the O&C Railroad, which went bankrupt and the land reverted to the government.

The logging rights were sold throughout the years and JoCo used the tax monies to fund local government. When the accursed environmentalists sued and shut down all the logging the fed gov started giving us federal subsidies in lieu of allowing us to log said O&C lands.

We deserve that money...it’s not a gift, it’s a replacement for the logging taxes we used to collect.
