She denies she was close to the Communist rulers in East Germany, where she grew up.
So this 1972 photo of her in military-style uniform has left German Chancellor Angela Merkel not amused.
Then called Angela Kasner and aged 17, she is shown happily involved in a civil defence exercise under the gaze of an East German officer.

Sonja Felssberg, now 58 and an old school comrade, found the photo and handed it to a national German newspaper. Mrs Merkel will hope the row doesn't undermine her bid for a third term in office

It was published as Mrs Merkel, who was the subject of austerity protests in Italy at the weekend, tried to play down allegations in a new book that she was much closer to the Communist rulers of the lost Socialist state than she previously admitted to, including holding a post as a propaganda secretary in the youth movement the FDJ.

No one is forced to in that way. Many in the same situation did not join.
True dat.
Yep, that is one. But an earlier one showed here contempt more. I looked for it, but did not find it. It was a long time ago.

If anything, she'll pick up votes. How do people think she managed to squeak out her first threadbare victory?
I cannot believe that people like you actually believed Bush meant what he said. He was about to declare war on radical muzzies and he needed help from other muzzie Countries. Do you think he could of got the cooperation he needed if he had called islam the religion of pieces? It was all political. Your ignorance about how politics work makes me wonder about you.
And your local hero whose fingerprints were found in the townhouse where the home made bombs full of nails were made and accidently detonated killing his girlfriend and a couple of other members of the weather underground terrorists who planned to bomb a social event nearby, he’s now an illustrious professor.
People in glass houses.
Barroso’s not in charge. Nor is van Rompuy. They’re all part of the elite apparatus there.
Comrades.
What cooperation did he get? or for that matter need? Iraq is close to becoming a de-jure extension of Iran (it’s already a de-facto one), and that was helped along by Bush, who allowed Iraq’s new government to write an Islamic constitution rather than secular.
>I cannot believe that people like you actually believed Bush meant what he said.<
.
If he didn’t mean it he should’ve not said it, especially not at a State of the Union address.
There are plenty in the country who believe every word a president says.
Why do you think we still have O in the WH after the first disasterous 4 years? Why do you think this country is unable to wake up to the menace of Islam?
Words have consequences.
Fair enough, but I still wouldn't condemn youngsters for succumbing to peer pressure. Wasn't the last Pope a member at one time of a Hitler youth organization?
I wasn't criticizing the fact that it was posted. It was quite interesting. I just think it's somewhat unfair to criticize a teenager who'd grown up under Communism -- and Merkel did; she was from East Germany.
At age 12, not age 17. Very big difference.
