I think the murders were to celebrate th Islamic victory on 9/11. Just like the military/terrorist storming of our Benghazi embassy occurred on 9/11.

As stated here, the Mary Jane scattering was just to throw investigators off. And it did.

Yes, I confess that I had temporarily forgotten that the Waltham murders occurred on Sept. 11, 2011.

That in itself, plus the fact that the suspects appear to be radical Islamists, should go a long way toward determining the true motive for the crimes.
