I know the above is rhetoric speculation but who trusts our government to ever tell us the truth?

OMG YOU NAILED IT
That is indeed a problem.
There was a time when I would have accepted statements from the FBI specifically or the DOJ in general at face value, but they have soiled their own bed so many times (false testimony by FBI agent in Valerie Plame case 'leak' trial, false testimony to Congress by DOJ in New Black Panther case, stonewalling, outright lies, and retaliation against whistleblowers by DOJ from the top down related to Fast and Furious, to name just a few) that there is no longer any way to avoid the conclusion that government lies are SOP (in general, but especially with the current criminal regime) rather than a rare aberration.
This is exactly the technique that they will use to go after 'Tea Party extremists' and other conservatives. They will drop hints that those enemies of the US were engaging in nefarious plots or associated with evil co-conspirators, then dispose of them in "self-defense" shootings or "he was resisting arrest" scenarios.
That's why I would be cautious about jumping to conclusions, even though I'm not blind to the threat from jihadi wanna-be's that our foolish immigration policies have brought right into our neighborhoods.
