Fuzzy, I have Sergio Garcia on line one, he wants to know what he's gotten himself into now.
Ewan Murray with what figures to escalate the Sergio-Tiger spat into a full-fledged controversy and some rough times for Sergio if Fuzzy Zoeller's past use of a similar joke is any barometer.
The Spaniard was on stage at the European Tour's gala players' awards dinner, where he was questioned by the Golf Channel's Steve Sands. García, who has been embroiled in verbal battles with Woods since the Players Championship at Sawgrass this month, was asked in jest if he would have the American round for dinner one night during the upcoming US Open. "We will have him round every night," García said. "We will serve fried chicken."
**Sergio quickly issued a statement apologizing. From GolfChannel.com:
Garcia soon apologized for the off-color comment, saying in a statement: I apologize for any offense that may have been caused by my comment on stage during the European Tour Players Awards dinner. I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner.
**Derek Lawrenson wrote up the incident for the Daily Mail and added this:
Several guests at last nights awards dinner were clearly shocked by Garcias comment, while one leading Tour professional said: You didnt hear that as he walked past journalists present.
America’s fried chickens have come home to roast!
Oh the humanity.
Fuzzy Zoeller’s material
I don’t get this fried chicken is racist stuff. . .which dumb ass doesn’t like fried chicken?
Between his last round of golf and this comment: The man is choking his chicken,
I don't either. Fried chicken is about as racist as hamburgers and hot dogs.
Slow baked chicken is better than fried...
Don’t understand the apology...maybe PETA was offended???
Every Tuesday at Popeye’s, there are more black dudes than non-blacks.
I was there late this afternoon, and this has always happened every Tuesday. Soul food comprises of chicken and at black hoods, it’s a staple...so where’s the racist joke?
Uh Oh, Sergio (Think back to ‘80’s commercials)!
I always saw fried chicken primarily as a southern thang.
YUM!
Agree, what’s the big deal? Now if he had said ‘flied chicken,’ I would have gotten it.
Fried chicken, watermelon and purple kool-aid has always been one of my favorite meals.
Why is mentioning fried chicken and blacks together such a taboo?
I travel all over the US, and consequently go to a-lot of company picnics, plant lunches, or just lunches in general. I have observed that if one of the options is fried chicken, our higher melanin concentration brothers almost always get the chicken, so the “stereotype” is basically true. But so what? People like what they like.
It’s a sad day when you are accused of being a racist because you offer someone fried chicken, one of the foods of the gods.
The other foods of the gods is BACON! then Steak!
Duchy BS, next theyll apologize for being white... Tiger IS “colored”, so what!
