Perhaps require book reports in exchange for a driver’s license ...

My father, God rest his soul, required a book report on The Naked Communist before he allowed me to go see Doctor Zhivago back in the 1960s. I wasn't always as conservative as I am now, but that simple exercise largely prevented me from being brainwashed by any college professors

My 16-year-old has to read “Basic Economics” and “Applied Economics” this summer. That will teach him more about Econ than 90% of the population. All the kids are gun-nuts already, but I wish something would persuade them that they want to get jobs!

Good anecdote.
In the same time frame, late 50s - early mid - 60s, I was of an impressionable age.
The tack my Father used was to simply leave books such as the one you mention, along with other "colorful" conservative books laying where he knew I would see them. As I was a determined devourer of any book I could fins it was certain that I would, at the very least, skim through the contents.
It always seemed that somehow, the topics of the book would come up in conversation. A reference; a direct quote; an analogy to a point made, somehow this would insure that I understood what the book was about - or that I would go back and thoroughly 'read it' so I would be able to at least make some sort of sensible discussion of it or its topics.
I learned at an early age the travesty being assigned to persons and groups such as the John Birch Society and the true issues raised by Sen. McCarthy and how the media can manipulate public opinion.

Lessons learned early - processing of info based on set principles.
