Actually that perception by blacks does hold them back, and should be discussed openly. To be derided by “classmates” for being literate is absurd, but that’s what goes on. The problem is that too many have bought in to the notion that hip-hop thugs are the "true" blacks. The entertainment industry contributes to this.
What's needed is for educated, intelligent blacks to call out the idiots as being idiots.
