Sen. Amy Klobuchar has asked the U.S. Department of Energy to investigate the steep increase in Minnesota gas prices over the past few weeks.
Gasoline industry officials say regional gas prices have jumped 80 cents in the past month and 30 cents in the past week because of both unexpected and planned shutdowns at gasoline refineries.
But Klobuchar said the impact of temporary closures shouldn't have so much impact on the price consumers have to pay.
In a letter to Energy Secretary Steven Chu, the Democratic senator called on the Department of Energy to thoroughly examine the closures and timing of scheduled maintenance operations to prevent future supply shocks that cause gas prices to rise.

“Blame it on those tree huggers in MN, a cesspool of leftists. They like to put all kinds of requirements for boutique fuels so they can save the planet. Let them pay for it. The last time MN voted for a GOP Presidential candidate was 1972 and the only time since 1960.
Hell, they have groups in MN protesting the shipment of sand to ND for fracking. “
Note to MN, you voted DFL forever! Payback is a bitch. You have two Senators that couldn’t pick up your trash for a living. TS!
From someone who calls himself "LiveFreeOrDie2001" that's pretty funny stuff. So, live up to your moniker, live free, and don't buy it! That'll learn the capitalist bastards.
Yep! I got a little Saturn. :-)
I like the gay marriage comment, But tax-chick has it dead spot on.
Doesn’t matter how much oil or how close if there are not enough refineries to process the crude! And we have not been adding any refinery capacity, to the contrary, we are losing capacity.
I liked the gay marriage comment, too.
did any new state mandates or taxes take effect?
Quiet, senator. Still better than the European prices your president wants.
That's nothing. Here in the People's Socialist RepuliK of the truly sick and ILLANNOYED (Illinois) we went from $3.35 one morning to $3.85 in one day, then up to $4.19 the next.
This morning, gas down the street from me according to Gas Buddy (updated in the last 30 minutes) are $4.35.
ALLEGEDLY it's due to "refinery maintenance" and "accidents." Funny how those two events seem to occur at the same time every year now for the last 10 years or so....
loss of refining capacity and the yearly switchover to gubmint mandated boutique fuels.
Keep putting liberals in office, get higher gas prices.
