The “Powerful Houston Attorney” is Tony Buzbee. Regarding this case Buzbee said that “Williams will apologize” for calling her a “gold digger” and “drop” the lawsuit.

The fact that Buzbee took this case means that it is over. Tony takes these kinds of cases for fun when he likes the client and already has the goods on this guy. Likely text messages, etc. Williams would be very well served to drop this. If he does not he will be deposed by Tony and that is the last thing he wants to do. Listen to Tony in action here:

Prediction? Williams will apologize and drop the lawsuit.

Former Houston Texans star Mario Williams, who now plays for the Buffalo Bills, is worth over $30M with a $100M contract, but that isn't stopping him from suing Marzouki to get back the $785,000 engagement ring he gave her in February 2012.

$785,000 for an engagement ring? I would think a $10,000 ring ought to be plenty big enough and look just as good. It sounds like Mario Williams is an idiot and his (former) fiance is a gold digger. Personally I'm rooting for the gold digger, just to show how stupid Williams is. I would say by the time Williams finishes his NFL career, he will be flat broke with not a penny to his name. Dumb ass!

so, were gift taxes paid on the gift?

Gift taxes are not owed by the recipient, but by the giver, if the gift is over a certain dollar amount.

If he winds up not recovering the ring it will cost him far less than if he married his gold-digger and then got a divorce. Spending over 3/4 million on a ring is STUPID even if one is a multi-millionaire—IMO.

He broke off the engagement several times. She can keep the pretty bobble.

Hey Mario your Dear President Bam has taught you to ‘spread the wealth’. Let the girl have her ‘fair share’.

These suits are interesting and I imagine there are wide variations in result among the states. I would be inclined to rule that engagement rings are conditional gifts in contemplation of marriage. If the donor or donee break off their relationship the ring mst be returned.

I hope he gets his ring back from the shameless gold digger. But, even if he doesn’t he should consider himself lucky that he never married her, as it would have cost him much, much more. He would likely be bankrupt before it was all over, while she’d be living in luxury.

Don’t hold your breath. A recent ESPN documentary alleged that 70% of retired NFL players go broke after retiring. Can’t imagine why.

I was once engaged to someone who didn’t look too differently from that. The killer smile and inviting eyes turns demonic when the real person exposed herself. We sometimes get easily trapped by exteriors.
