In IRS scandal, echoes of Watergate
Washington Post ^ | May 13, 2013 | George Will

Posted on 05/14/2013 5:42:55 PM PDT by what's up

The burglary occurred in 1972, the climax came in 1974, but40 years ago this week — May 17, 1973 — the Senate Watergate hearings began exploring the nature of Richard Nixon’s administration. Now the nature of Barack Obama’s administration is being clarified as revelations about IRS targeting of conservative groups merge with myriad Benghazi mendacities.

This administration aggressively hawked the fiction that the Benghazi attack was just an excessively boisterous movie review. Now we are told that a few wayward souls in Cincinnati, with nary a trace of political purpose, targeted for harassment political groups with “tea party” and “patriot” in their titles. The Post has reported that the IRS also targeted groups that “ criticized the government and sought to educate Americans about the U.S. Constitution .” Credit the IRS operatives with understanding who and what threatens the current regime. The Post also reports that harassing inquiries have come from other IRS offices, including Washington.

Jay Carney, whose unenviable job is not to explain but to explain away what his employers say, calls the IRS’s behavior “inappropriate.” No, using the salad fork for the entree is inappropriate. Using the Internal Revenue Service for political purposes is a criminal offense.

The money quote.

I confess that I’m loving this scandal. For three years I’ve been telling my friends, conservative and liberal, that conservatives were being targeted by the IRS. NOBODY took me seriously...until yesterday. My Dem friends (good people, but seriously misguided) seem to be the most upset. Progressives don’t care what the IRS does to hurt others, but idealist-Dems and Independents are shaken to the core.

I concure! The WaPo actually going after the Obammunists for their crimes! Up is down and good is bad!

With the universe this out of whack, I am going to find the hottest woman I can and ask her to have sex with me. With the normal response being “no” I think that I may have a chance now that normal rules no longer apply.

This is a piece of full on crap. There’s no comparison with the “wing it” type of thing that Nixon pulled with a few of his admitted cronies. In this case, in parallel with the “gimme” tax exemptions given to 0bama’s bro-in-law, plus the exemptions given to “green” companies for pollution or bird-kill violations, this is unquestionably system-wide.

Fairly obvious now why the Tea Party had gone silent in 2012. They were under Obama’s fascist boot.

I see the author is George Will, and he's not really much of a conservative (IMO), but still, WaPo allowing a comparison to Watergate in their paper!

Whatever you do, don't wake me up. This is almost as good as the dream where I'm stranded alone on a deserted island with Miss January.

This is a column on the editorial page by the token conservative.

This is not WAPO reversing course or anything close to it.

Way above Watergate that was directed at the Dem party. Not Citizens or Citizens groups! Obama’s VJ said we will bring wrath to those against us and they did! It was a clear threat and it came to pass! Bummer will claim he was asleep just like Benghazi!
This Idiot has no idea what he has done to this country! I for one may never trust our government again! Just look at the EXE orders this fool has written! The next POTUS will be busy for years to just rescind! Complete POWER is ALL Bummer wanted and now the house of cards may fall! If we are Lucky! After all the Man has death, destruction, deciet, and much more on his hands!
Whats next? This is what you get with a Muslim without the fear of God in his soul. Thank you Mr. Obama for selling my Country down the Drain!

This was in the Washington Post? Reminds me of what a great paper the Washington Post used to be - back when the story mattered more than the "R" or "D" after a persons name... Back when Woodward was the man he's being today... back when George Will spoke the hard truths... Are these guys really willing to take on a corrupt and powerful Establishment again? I hope so...

This scandal could end up being MUCH worse.

Here's the gist: we know at least one case where tax filing information from a Conservative political action committee was passed through the IRS to a Liberal PAC. This is HIGHLY illegal, and violates multiple Federal laws on tax information privacy and disclosure. If we find out several Conservative PAC's had their IRS tax filing information passed to multiple Liberal PAC's with the full acquiescence of President Obama, the President could face not only impeachment, but also charged with violating multiple Federal laws, and I believe the Conservative PAC's could even directly sue President Obama and members of his Administration for monetary damages.

In short, we may have the makings of the most serious political scandal since Watergate.

Was it Ehrlichman or Haldeman who made the comment about it being hard to put the toothpaste back in the tube?

As the scope of the IRS scandal becomes clearer, the media will suddenly remember its #1 purpose: to protect President Obama. Maybe they can conspire to insulate him from any blame (it's all low-level operatives acting without his knowledge). Otherwise they will have to persuade the public that what the IRS did was not only excusable, but patriotic (for most of them, Tea Partiers are probably as worthy of sympathy as Communists were to Joseph McCarthy). It won't be hard to convince Democrats of that--maybe a few skewed polls will be produced to show that the public doesn't care and wants the Republican Party to back off.

We just have to convince Muslims that due to sequester, the IRS is using pages of the Koran for toilet paper.

Sit back with a big bowl of popcorn and watch matter and anti-matter annihilate each other.
